Meet The Nester

family photo

Hi there! I’m The Nester.  Why? Well, my real name Myquillyn, it’s quite unique and hard to pronounce and it just seemed easier to use a pretend name.  This is my family full of handsome fellas. Handsome, aren’t they, those fellas?

We usually don’t pose like that.  Usually, the men folk are doing something like this

and I sit at the computer like this but usually minus the clean hair and non Tshirt outfit

I started Nesting Place in November of 2007. I’ve always had a love affair with my house, ok, with all houses, and this blog is a place for you to come and find decorating encouragement, creative ideas, and be reminded that “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful”.

I like deals.  I like to find things and make them beautiful. I’m also not afraid to save my cold hard cash and invest it in a good sofa.

We All Want A Pretty House, Don’t We?

I know what it’s like to want a pretty house and not have much to work with and still have to get dinner on the table, nurse a baby and wash your hair. I know what it’s like to rent and live with white walls and ugly carpet. I have decorated on no budget in the past.  I’ve decided not to wait until my house is perfect to share it, use it and love it.  I regret those years where I spent my time wishing my home was something more and not enjoying what I had.

imperfect

I want to be able to live fully within the mess, with the imperfections.

This isn’t a DIY blog.  This isn’t a typical decorating blog. This is a blog about how to think about your home. And along the way, I hope you and I both can focus more on our own personal style. Your current home can be the home you love.

Most of the photos you will find on Nesting Place are photos I took of our home–if I grabbed the photo from someone else, I’ll tell you with a link to them.

When I started Nesting Place, we had lived in three different rentals in three years and before that we owned a home and were able to spruce up the outside of it.

This is the last house we owned:

The old nest before and after

My motto is “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful” and I have to remind myself of that daily. I love our home and want it to be a place to live a real life where all who enter are free to be who they really are, faults and all.

I really like to have a pretty house but even more than that, I really like to live in and USE a pretty house.

I’m so glad you are here. Decorating your home is an adventure and a journey. A fun one. I hope you find acceptance and encouragement here and learn to love your nest more every day.

More about me: I’m a design school drop out who took a week long course so I could be a certified home stager and redesigner. So I don’t have much training as far as schooling but, I’ve had lots of experience in real houses. My husband is an ambitious entrepreneur so we have had a few times of plenty and lots of lean times. We have lived in 13 different houses/apartments/condos some for only a month or two while waiting on a closing, some for years.
 book
I wrote a best selling design book. I figured out a long time ago that even though it’s fun to do the latest DIY in my home, unless I have the right mindset about my home, a cute DIY project is just a bandaid on the problem. To me, this book is a “pre-decorating” book. I’ll tell you more about it when the time comes.

The Nester has been featured in Ladies Home Journal

 & Cottages and Bungalows

DSC_3014

And had a four room feature the the February 2013 issue of Better Homes and Gardens Do It Yourself magazine.

Read about the photo shoot here.

Our home will also be featured in the 2013 issue of Better Homes & Garden’s Christmas Ideas. I dare say I have the least expensive, most simple Christmas decorating that has ever been featured in a magazine.

I promise. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
