Un-Word of the Year

unword

I love the popularity of claiming a word for the year.

This year I’m joining up with three friends (& hopefully you will join us) in declaring a word that we ARE NOT.

An UNword.

The UN-word is a word that you are rejecting for the new year. You would like to Un-Do it.

It doesn’t have to be a real word. Maybe you don’t want to be bossy anymore so your word would be UNbossy.

(I have a slight obsession with UNwords)

My UNword of the year is : Distracted

I want to be UN-Distracted which is increasingly difficult for me. There are so many ways to be distracted. Good things,  not so good things, shiny things. In my work and home and family I’ve noticed I’ve missed things because of distractions I’ve allowed in my life.

UNword

Want to join in? Link up at any of the four participating blogs next Tuesday.  Darlene, Angela, Edie and I will all have the same linky up and you can link up from any of our blogs and claim your UNword.

  1. Love this idea! My UNword this year…Complicated.

  2. Great idea, and so far I’m on board with you and Darlene for sure! No distractions, no guilt!

  3. Something to think about. I love it.

  4. carol in ga says:

Love this idea. I think you have picked the perfect word. can’t wait for next Tues.

  5. I LOVE the idea of an un-word! There are sooooo many that come to mind that I think I need to just sit with this idea first before selecting one.

    Great post!

  6. Yes. This word!! What a fantastic goal. Can’t wait to see how this unfolds in your life. I could use some focus myself…
    oooohhh, looookkk…. sparkles……

  7. I’ve been doing the word of the year thing. I’m making myself look up a verse with my word in it everyday and write about it in a journal. My word is faith.

  8. Love this idea too! I need to think of what I want my “unword” to be!

  9. My Un-word of the Year is “unemployed” – as in I’d like to be un-unemployed.

  10. Ooh, I can’t wait! I already know what I will be writing about. I was just waiting for the right now and this is it.

  11. I’m claiming UNORGANIZED! I’ve tried my entire life and just can’t get it together….ever! UGH! WHY?!?

  12. Distraction, that’s a hard one! So often I confuse what might be a distraction for “research” for my art and projects. Fine lines, fine lines.

We have a word for people or things around the house that distract us: Distractacon. It is most often used to describe a little brother who likes to bother his brother and sister while they work. :)

Wishing you a very undistracting 2014, Nester!

  13. This is just way too fun, dear Nester! I’m spreading the news
    http://creeksideministries.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-unword-invitation.html

and it didn’t take long for me to nail down my own very unpleasant UNword. I can’t wait to be done with it!

Thanks for this challenge, my friend …

  14. The list of options for me is long. I will have to narrow it down!

  15. Oh golly! This is the first year i understood and picked a word (abide/dwell) AND a Bible verse (John 15:4) for the year and now here go picking an un-word. So okay, my un-word will be undivided…as in having an undivided heart. When fear and doubt threaten me i want my heart to be fully focused on The Lord and what He CAN do instead of split in focusing on the problem and what I can’t do. There are several situations over which I have no control and I need to stop turning them over & over in mind looking for solutions and making myself sick with stress.

  16. I guess I’ve always liked the idea of putting my energy into what I want to create not what I’m ‘Un – ing’ :) Though I’m trying not to be quite as boring…..so I suppose that might be an ‘Un’.

  17. This is going to sound weird, but I think I remember you saying in a post recently that you got some cute sweatshirts because you’re often cold. Have I lost it? If you know what I’m talking about, I was wondering where you have the best luck finding them : )

    • Yep! It was on a post I wrote at (in)courage! I wrote about goals and such and I bought some “decorative sweathirts” to keep warm and not look frumpy. :Target, Marshalls, & some crazy stores in the mall like Forever 21 and such usually have fancy sweatshirts. xo

  18. I love this!! Takes the stress out of the whole thing. And let’s face it, who among us doesn’t need to UNDO some things instead of doing more things!

  19. A simple idea and one I wish I had thought of ! :) Will def come back to view others’ UNWORDS. Thank you!

  20. I would love to know about the bike/saying at the top of this post. My sister and I collect bike art work and this would be perfect for her. It is even in her favorite color. Where would I find this that I could print and frame.

    • Hi Bonnie, isn’t it fantastic? Darlene provided it for us so you’ll need to click over to her blog (link at the end of the post) and ask her. xoxo

  21. What an awesome idea! I already have my “word” for 2014, which is Accountability.

And now, thanks to this post, I have my “unword” — Afraid! This year I want to be UNAFRAID!!!!!

In business, in my relationships, in everything. In 2014 I shall be accountable and UNAFRAID!

    Thanks, everyone, for your inspiration.

    Peace & Veggies,

    Larissa

  22. Oh boy….distracted is a good un-word. Sometimes I feel like the ball on the racquetball court…bouncing all over the place at a ferocious rate. As much as I love the idea of not being distracted, I have no idea how to accomplish that. I hope you’ll be sharing how you move in that direction as the year ticks by.

I choose ‘restore’ for my word of the year. I think I’m going to stick with that….choosing an un-word just might distract from that. ;)

Wishing you extraordinary success with your un-word!
    Diane

  23. Just finally got around to processing for my unword which did not turn out to be procrastination. I did not realizing it was yours too. Distraction came out on top from 3 choices.

  24. Jennifer talkington says:

I have been a reader of your blog since 2008! I usually love all your links ,recommendations, whimsical stories about your beautiful family, and basically all things nester. BUT I have to say I am completely shocked and disappointed that you would allow planned parenthood to advertise on your blog and promote their culture of death!

  25. I don’t see PP (Thank the Lord) and I am glad others know about them promoting the culture of death but I don’t think bloggers have total control of their ads, Google just sticks stuff in. I live in Washington state and there is an ad for a local college that I am quite certain has not made a deal with The Nester.
I just picked a word after all these years (Color) and now you want an un-word?? Too much for me. My son used to love to have an un-birthday, now that would be fun.

  26. Glad others may not see Planned Parenthood ad. I assure it is there and ironically below ad for Compassion.!!!!!

    • so sorry about that! they are third party ads based on keywords and searches, as ads pop up that I don’t like–or that readers don’t like I can go in and block them, thanks for the heads up!!
