My Tufted Bed :: A Review of the Skyline Linen Nail Button Wingback

I ordered this bed back in February or March of 2012 and I wanted to give you an update on how we like it so far….

skyline tufted bed review

{UPDATED:: It’s now 2014 and the price and reviews have changed. My thoughts:: I still LOVE the bed (it survived a move just beautifully) and I would buy it again. The price on Joss & Main fluctuates but is still worth watching, same with Amazon.}

I happened to find this tufted bed through Joss and Main.  The price was $535 for the entire queen bed (not just the headboard) and that included shipping.

This is the bed I was originally going to purchase.  Tufted beds pop up a few times a month through Joss & Main so I had done my research on this particular bed (the one above), oftentimes Joss & Main will list the maker so you can google and read the reviews for the products before you purchase them. At the time, this bed had great reviews and I couldn’t wait to buy it.

But during the next sale, that bed wasn’t included but another bed by the same maker, was. I had $165 in credit burning a hole in my virtual cute orange skinny jeans pocket so I bought a different bed on a whim–the bed I have now.  After I bought my non-returnable bed I figured I should do some research and see if I could find some reviews. Here’ the review back in 2012::

I didn’t take a screen shot at the time but as you can see, When You Click on Skyline Tufted Bed today that reviews are 3 out of 5 stars.  Also, the price is a lot higher on Amazon.  I think it was within $100 at the time, today the Queen costs more than any other size which proves it’s worth watching something for a few weeks before you buy.   Back to my point, SHEESH, 3 stars?  What have I done?

(Update: here are the reviews for the king bed (queen is currently unavailable in the same color) in March 2014–much better!)

So I read the reviews here’s the most famous review, the one that scared me::

1) Bed is a nightmare to put together and is not sturdy feeling once constructed.
2) The fabric was coming apart in some areas of the headboard.
3) The nailheads aren’t real. They are plastic and only every 5th one is more real looking but it stands out from the other row of plastic “nailheads”.
4) There were a few places where the screw area was off and/or it was stripped so it didn’t even take the screw.
5) The chemical treatment of the fabric stays pretty strong for a good week. It can give you a headache, even waking up with one.
6) The space between the headboard and the bottom panel is too far, it leaves a huge gap in the middle so it looks unfinished.
7) The back of the headboard is open and not covered w/any material. Just wood partical board with splinters sticking out (be careful).
8) The bed only comes with 3 panels for the front and two sides, not the headboard side. You cannot have this bed anywhere except up against a wall otherwise, you’ll see all the unfinished areas.

After reading that review on Amazon, I just knew this bed was going to be made of cardboard, covered with rayon and stapled together.  But I had no other choice than to wait until it was delivered to see my regret in person.  So we got the bed.  And my anticipated disappointment wasn’t disappointed.  I posted this photo and words on instagram 22 weeks ago:

“Headboard for our new bed, I can already tell it’s a dud. It’s not tall enough, I think there will be a big gap b/n our mattress & where the headboard starts. Deciding if I want to keep it. But I like a challenge.”

And then because I am impatient smart, I grabbed some of the parts and mocked up the bed before we took the old one down.  Oh, things were beginning to look up.

Now I’ll take the observations from the review that scared me and pair them with mine after using the bed four months my words are in pink::

1) Bed is a nightmare to put together and is not sturdy feeling once constructed.

I’d love to say that I put it together but I didn’t my husband did and said it wasn’t any easier or more difficult than any other piece of furniture that he’s put together from Ikea and other places.

2) The fabric was coming apart in some areas of the headboard.

Mine was perfectly  fine on mine, but yes, that is a HUGE deal if the fabric is coming apart you’d need to return it–if you got yours from someplace like Joss & Main even if it’s non-returnable, if there is a flaw you need to call and they should help you.

3) The nailheads aren’t real. They are plastic and only every 5th one is more real looking but it stands out from the other row of plastic “nailheads”.

Yes, they used the nailhead trim that you can buy already connected.  Every 6th or so nailhead is real and sticks up a little further.  It’s a complete non-issue for me.  Makes me wonder if people don’t have anything better to do than contemplate the size of their 1/3 inch nailheads on their bed.  Of course, I am a self professing Imperfectionist, so keep that in mind.  If this bed cost $3000 the fake nailhead trim would be annoying and a cheap shortcut.  I didn’t think it mattered on a $500 bed.  Of course, they are charging $900 on Amazon now, pick your battles.

4) There were a few places where the screw area was off and/or it was stripped so it didn’t even take the screw.

I specifically asked my husband about this and he agreed that some of the screws had to be coaxed into their place.  He shrugged and said it wasn’t unlike other things he’s put together and was no big deal at all. Keep in mind we have bad luck with stuff and always have to sweet talk the parts together so he’s used to stuff like this and he works with tools for a living so it’s not a big deal for him.

5) The chemical treatment of the fabric stays pretty strong for a good week. It can give you a headache, even waking up with one.

I am the world’s strongest smeller.  I can smell when someone near me burps so naturally, I was concerned about this envisioning me sleeping on the sofa for the next two years because my pretty new bed gave me headaches.   I noticed a smell for about two days, got no headache and any smell disappeared.

6) The space between the headboard and the bottom panel is too far, it leaves a huge gap in the middle so it looks unfinished.

I want to go in-depth on this point because this can be an issue with most beds that are sold online like this.

YES.  This is true IF you have a  thin mattress and or box spring. This was the point I was most worried about.  We have a regular box spring and mattress of average depth (plus a cushy feather bed that really plumps up the depth of our mattress and you cannot see a space between the headboard and mattress.  But if so it would have driven me crazy.

See what we are referring to?  The headboard doesn’t go all the way to the floor, it ends right at the top of the mattress.  So if your mattress isn’t very thick, there could be a gap.  If your mattress is really thin?  There could be a big gap.

7) The back of the headboard is open and not covered w/any material. Just wood partical board with splinters sticking out (be careful).

Mine has black muslin covering it but yes, you cannot turn the bed with the headboard facing the door.  So?

8) The bed only comes with 3 panels for the front and two sides, not the headboard side. You cannot have this bed anywhere except up against a wall otherwise, you’ll see all the unfinished areas.

So?  I only see beds not up with the headboard against the wall in furniture catalogs.  But yes, the back of the bed is unfinished, just like the back of my dressers and hutch and TV and refrigerator.  It will look bad if you place it backwards in your room.

****

The biggest issue I can find with the bed is the fact that the bottom of the headboard starts so high.  If our mattress hadn’t been as thick (I think our mattress & boxspring together are about 20″ deep) I probably would have gone out and bought a feather bed topper  but still would have been annoyed.  It’s definitely a shortcut that discount furniture makers take that you want to be aware of.

Something else I noticed is that there is a small gap on each side between the mattress and the “wings”.  Again, it doesn’t bother me in the least and I’m not sure how to avoid that because of the design.  I do like that there are wings and would recommend that for a bed like this.  Otherwise, if the two side wings weren’t there I think the fact that the headboard doesn’t go behind the mattress would be really obvious.

Of course, once you put pillows and people and blankets on the bed the little gaps become invisible.

And you don’t really notice it at all.

All in all we like the bed, it’s very sturdy, doesn’t lean when we lean against the headboard and is a good deal for the price.  I’m really happy with it and would recommend it and purchase it again if we had it to do over.

UPDATE: It’s now 2014, we’ve moved the bed to a new house, taken it apart, put it back together and still, no complaints. Above is an image from the 2013 Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas magazine that featured our home and the bed was the star of the bedroom.

Here are some current choices on Amazon. I’ve noticed over the past year that the price of this bed has gone up both on Joss & Main and Amazon, it’s quite popular and I’m guessing that’s prompted it being marked up.

  1. Great description and review! Can you tell me how deep the wings are? I am thinking about buying this and can’t decide if the “wings” will stick out so that I will feel like I need to look around them to see my alarm clock or baby monitor on my nightstand.

    • I’m not home but maybe 4ish inches. there’s no way you’d need to peer around them, even with your head down unless you sleep with your head tight against the headboard they shouldn’t be in the way at all :)

Helllo! I just wanted to thank you for this post as it helped me choose what bed to order! I love that you addressed the comments posted by amazon. I’m continuing my research while I wait on my bed and I figured I’d provide the link to reviews provided by wayfair.com as most of the comments were positive! This of course just makes me even more excited for my brand new bed! Especially as I’m currently living on a mattress and boxspring.

    Thanks again!

    • Try compare the price with ATG stores or Joss & Main if you wanna shop at Wayfair, the latter price is more expensive, mine a bit different style but also from Skyline and $90.00 price difference.

      • You’re right about the price difference, but just wanted to throw it out there that Wayfair actually owns Joss & Main. Wayfair often has some incredibly low prices for good quality stuff, but if the same items come up on J&M, you’ll save even more!

  3. First I’d like to say I’m so happy that you reviewed this product. I’m thinking of buying this bed in teal. I have a smaller room though Do you think I should buy the whole bed or just the headboard? Second. I’m seriously in love with your room!!! :)

  4. Is your headboard linen? I was looking on wayfair and found one that said linen gray. I wanted to know if its the same. Thanks!!

    • it looks like linen, it has some slubs but I’m not sure it’s actual ‘linen’ or if that’s the color, the exact color has been difficult to figure out compared to all the descriptions online

  5. You’re bedroom is beyond gorgeous. May I ask where you got the sunburst mirror above the bed? Thank you!

  6. Hi! I am considering a skyline bed, but can’t find the detail I’m looking for anywhere. Can you tell me what the support is like? Is it a metal frame? Or wooden slats? Thanks a ton! Your bedroom is beautiful!

  7. Thanks for this post! I bought the same headboard and put it together yesterday. Agree that some of the nail holes aren’t perfectly aligned. I noticed a smell and was concerned – happy to know it goes away!

  8. Right away I am ready to do my breakfast, afterward having my breakfast coming again to read additional
    news.

  9. I wish I had read this before I purchased the bed.
I think the quality is OK for the overall super cheap price. However the missing part of the headboard is a huge issue for me. I do not have a super thick mattress and even if I had there would still be gaps on the sides. It is completely beyond me as to why someone would design something like this. I would have been perfectly happy to pay a little more for a complete bed. We are an interior design firm usually dealing with high end vendors and I tested this out for my own home. More disturbing I find that Joss and Main is not upfront about what you get. An image of a “Naked bed” without mattress and fancy sheets would have been clear and honest and prevented me from ordering this piece.
I can’t say that I would buy anything from them again after this.

  10. PS I just looked at my bed again and the nailheads are fine, each one is separate and they are not plastic. However the fabric of the wings does not match the material of the rest of the bed.. Its slightly off…

  11. VERY helpful. Thank you!

  12. Hi, LOVE your blog! I am looking at the same bed and am just wondering, which fabric did you get yours in? Sooooo many choices…. Thanks -Shelly

  13. Can I ask where you found your nightstand lamps? Love those!

  14. Hi! Thanks for your post! I just ordered this bed and can’t wait for it to come in. I am wondering you could possibly give be the measurement from the top of the baseboard to the bottom of the headboard. The only worry I have is about that extra space between the mattress and the head board. Thanks!

  15. Tara Conroy says:

Thank you for your in depth review. I have been researching this bed and was also nervous given the reviews on amazon. Your pictures and review definitely helped me make up my mind to go ahead and purchase this bed.

  16. Thank you so much for this review. I just bought this bed. I was torn between the linen grey that you chose and the linen charcoal. My room is on the small side and since i’m painting it grey similar to yours, i wanted a lighter color for the bed so the room would be bigger but ultimately i was worried about it getting stained so i went for the charcoal instead. I hope it turns out looking just as great though. :)

BTW I bought mine from Wayfair.com in a queen size. The charcoal color was $70 more but i found a promo code and saved $71 so it worked out just right.

  17. I am completely in love with this bed but it’s too tall for our space! Do you think it’s possible to chop the headboard down about 5 inches? I figured this would work with the big mattress gap, but since I can’t physically see it until I order it…what do you think?

    Thanks!

  18. You are my hero for posting this review! I saw this bed at Joss & Main last year, and didn’t get it specifically because of the reviews on Amazon!
But now that I’m reading your review, I think I might try it out! You really can’t beat the price. And like you said, you have to pick your battles.

Thanks again for the wonderful and through review!

    xx

  19. Julia S. says:

First of all thank you for posting this review. After reading it, I bought the bed from Wayfair (who owns Joss and Main) and I am very happy I did. A couple of things I wanted to mention for other readers researching the bed.
    1) Color Gray- So I asked the Wayfair rep the difference between Charcoal and Gray. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being white and 10 being black, Charcoal was about a 8.5-9 and Gray was 5. He was right. I ordered Gray and it was a true Gray.
    2) Nail Head Trim- So my trim is not attached in one strip like yours. Each nail is separate and they are real.
    3) Assembly- I was able to assemble the bed by myself because I was too impatient to wait for my husbands help. I am 31yrs old and have put together plenty of Ikea furniture. Armed with a power screwdriver, I went to work. I didn’t have any issues. Towards the end, he had to hold some of the larger pieces while I screwed in the screws, but it was relatively easy. I am sure I could have managed without him.
My price was $532 including shipping. I couldn’t be happier. It was a steal at that low of a price :)

    • Julia S. says:

Also, I too have about 1″ gap between the mattress and headboard, but you can’t see anything when the pillows are up.

  22. Hi, I have the same upholstered headboard and love it. It was sold under the Nate Berkus name at HSN, but the box said Skyline. So, it ‘s the same manufacturer. I love it and it’s held up for 4 years now. Your bedroom is gorgeous and it’s giving me ideas!!

  23. It’s a pity you don’t have a donate button! I’d most certainly donate to this outstanding blog! I suppose for now i’ll settle for bookmarking and adding your RSS

In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made good

a lot more helpful than ever before.

  26. I just bought this bed at a garage sale–brand new and still in the plastic packaging. The only downfall is there are not any instructions. Does anyone have the assembly instructions they’d be willing to email me?

  31. Right now it appears like Movable Type is the best blogging
platform out there right now. (from what I’ve read) Is that what you’re using on your
    blog?

  32. Thanks for this post. I did a lot of research (including reading this post!) before purchasing a very similar Skyline bed — the Ardenne — in linen talc from Joss and Main last month and we have be delighted with it. Ours does have real single nail heads, so I think they have made improvements in that area. The fabric and style is gorgeous and the bed is very solid. I have no gap between my mattress and the headboard but we bought a new mattress with a pillowtop and the mattress salesman recommended a high box spring to go with the type of bed we were planning to purchase. With a thin mattress and/or boxspring, we definitely would have had a problem, so keep that in mind before purchasing. The bed took a while to assemble (2-2 1/2 hours), but it was not a challenge. Maybe for someone who had never assembled furniture it would have been. I did have one of the padded sideboards come with a defective screw hole and I was not able to get it to attach tightly. However, Skyline shipped me an entirely new sideboard without any problems and it arrived a week later. For $666 shipped I am impressed. I looked at local stores and other chain stores (Ikea, Dania, and local stores) and this bed has far higher quality and style for the price than anywhere else I saw. I was nervous to purchase but I would encourage people to look at the newer reviews because it really seems that Skyline must have gotten their act together.

  33. On the other hand, its fine display gives a delight to the
user with a 3. The frame around the screen is of a dark gray color.
Having this app is a great way to keep up with
    the weather.

  34. This new date is for the Xbox 360 and PC version
with the PS3 version arriving sometime later that month.
In the various other hand, they take lengthier time for you complete and therefore require speeding up with more gems if you’re prepared to.
There are many combos that you can use that will help you accomplish your
    mission objective.

  35. Hi,
Could someone give the measurement between the floor and the bottom of the headboard?
That seems like what most are not pleased with.
    Thanks,

  36. Hi – My parents have the same bed but in the King size and they have had no complaints. Can you share where you got the gold lamps on your end tables?

  37. sorry you may have said this already, but how tall does the headboard stand up against the wall?

    • I’m not at home to measure it (working from a coffee shop) but amazon says 61″ and that seems about right. It’s shorter than me (I’m 5’4″ but still feels like a good size)

  38. April Thompson says:

Now that you’ve had this bed for a while what do you think of it? How has is stood up to wear and tear?

    • I’m glad you asked, just updated the post. We still LOVE the bed, it even survived being taken apart and moved an hour away to our new home, I added an updated photo too!

  39. Gorgeous room!! Where are the brass lamps from?? On your bedside tables?!

  40. Love your post and your bedroom! It looks gorgeous! I was just wondering for these kinds of beds if it’s just the mattress or bother the mattress and box needed.

  41. I did not read all the comments, so forgive me if I am repeating a point already made. Joss & Main is owned by Wayfair. I have learned to ALWAYS check a product on Joss against what is on Wayfair. Usually the “sale” price on Joss is minimal… like a few $’s sometimes. For me, I would rather pay a few more $’s because returns to Wayfair are no problem. You can also check reviews on Wayfair! I bought some pillows on Joss that had very little filler and there was no opening to put in a new pillow. Also looked kinda cheap. Trashed. I bought what turned out to be a hideous piece of subway art from Joss. It looked like an out of focus photograph. I was very disappointed because I loved all the words/phrases on it. Anyway, with their no return policy, it sits waiting to be re-purposed. It’s very tall and narrow. The bad purchases led me to do research and discover the Joss/Wayfair connection. The Joss app on my iPad pops up sales like 3 times a day and I completely ignore them. I have ordered large furniture from Wayfair twice and was VERY happy with them. I got the Hampton 5-piece wall system and the Kathy Ireland Tribeca Loft desk for my craft room (it’s huge & fits my sewing machine & serger together with plenty of room) They are both more of a light cream and not a true white which was ok with me because my kitchen has the same color cabinets. Note: those types of items are trucked to a local delivery place near you, who then brings to your house. My local company was fantastic! The shelf units were already put together and carried upstairs by the delivery guys. The shelf arrived in a rectangle box that was encased in a crate! :O Lots of wood and staples. I had to wait a few days for my yard guys to come and pry it apart for me. (I have very helpful people) They even carried it upstairs for me. It is pretty heavy. I then attached the legs very easily. So, this is my experience with Joss & Man/Wayfair. BTW your bedroom is beautiful :)

  42. Thanks for posting this! I’ve been wanting to purchase a SkyLine bed but I was worried about the quality but your review really helps a lot in the decision making process. Much appreciated!

  43. Magnificent items from you, man. I’ve keep in mind your stuff prior to and you’re just too magnificent.
I really like what you have acquired right here, certainly like what you are stating and
the best way by which you say it. You are making it enjoyable and you
still take care of to stay it sensible. I cant wait to learn much
more from you. That is really a wonderful website.

  44. Thank you for the review, very helpful. I have (mostly) made up my mind to purchase this bed…my only holdup is the measurements. Can you tell me how deep the bed is please? That is, how many inches from the wall does it extend? Thanks!

I have a question about the grey linen fabric. On the Wayfair website, a company representative mentioned that the grey linen fabric on your bed, syk2716 is the item number for a king, has a metallic thread running through it, while the grey linen fabric on syk2908 (which looks just like your bed but is called “Skyline Furniture Wingback Bed” does not. Can you tell me if your bed has a metallic thread running through it?
