I Heart Handcrafted

The older I get….join me at (in)courage to find out what happens as I age.

And I actually made that bread.  With my own hands.  And flour and yeast and an oven and junk.  I’m using a book called Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day {my sweet long time friend told me about it} and now my boys want bread for every meal and snack.  Who knew bread could be so rewarding?

Delicious–and beautiful! I tried making some of the artisan breads. They tasted great but their looks weren’t anything to take a picture of, that’s for sure :) Maybe I’ll try again. What a beautiful picture!

I’m getting that book from the library again. I’ve got a bread machine (okay, I have TWO) that I often use to get the dough made, then I take it from there. And I always use it (them) to make pizza dough.

  3. Kimba says:

Love that book. Love that bread.

I’ve taken it out of the library so many times that I really just need to go buy it.

  4. Dawn Camp says:

I’m a witness! You posted it on instagram, right? So that’s like I was there in your kitchen (not that I would ever doubt your glorious bread making abilities).

  5. Catherine says:

My friend & I just had a conversation yesterday about how much more rewarding food is when you make it from scratch. I made my own *simple* pizza dough the other night and will never buy a mix again {sorry, Jiffy!}.

    Your bread looks delicious!

  6. My husband is a baker and he loves that book. I have a few extra pounds on my body right now thanks to it! Totally worth it, though. YUM. :)

  7. Kay S says:

I just got that book from the library. I’m intimidated despite the enormous amount of bread I made while in US Coast Guard cook school. I’m going to make some, you’ve inspired me!

  8. Yetunde says:

I love homemade bread! Yours looks really fancy and pretty, good job!

  9. This looks divine! I’ve had a long love affair with bread, but especially fell in love with the artisan bread while in Europe a few years ago. Bravo…your loaf looks amazing!!

I love Zoe Francois’ books. She has the original Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes book plus she has another one with healthy breads and I think she’s also writing one about pizza. The bread is so easy and so amazing.

  13. Imperfect says:

I use this book, too! We are loving homemade bread – and I’m loving that it’s so easy!

    impressed. quite.

  15. Melanie says:

Looks like I’m going to need to get my hands on that book. That bread looks (and i bet tastes) delicious!

  16. cailan says:

This is pretty inspirational. I used to make fresh bread for my family every week. What has happened to me? I need to get it out of my mind that it has to take a long time, and remember that baking is one of life’s simple pleasures. Thanks for the reminder.

  17. Your bread looks amazing! That book is amazing as well. I work at a bakery and we have used several modifications of their recipes with great success. Now that I know that bread can be so easy, I don’t really want to buy it at the store! If you are looking for another super quick bread that requires no rising or yeast packets, google around for a good beer bread recipe. Hot bread in under an hour!

  18. Laura says:

quick question… what are the other “tools” need with that bread book? huge tub with lid for storing? baking stone? any other random things?

  19. Meredith says:

    Looooove that book!

  20. Karen says:

Just curious Nester-is this whole grain?

  21. Maggie says:

Your bread looks fabulous! I am going to have to give this cookbook a shot. I had a hard time making bread until I learned the secret of letting it rise in a warm oven. Now I am really getting into bread. I just can’t keep up with the way that my family eats it!

  22. Jenn says:

GORGEOUS!!! I have been using that book for about a year and LOVE it all!!! I buy the HUGE bag of flour from Sams and store it in a large lidded glass jar from Walmart ($20) on my counter – it’s beautiful! (Sams has yeast, too – it was like $4 and will last forever.) And when you buy the giant sack of flour, it’s cheap, too! Enjoy!

  23. Dawn says:

YUM! Glad you decided to use that oven and junk! Hee hee!

  24. Oh how I love homemade bread!!! You’re killing me posting this right before swimsuit season! Looks like you did a great job making it!

  25. I am THRILLED that you are enjoying it! I actually made my weeks worth of dough yesterday. NOT HELPING on my low carb lifestyle :)

  26. Joylynn says:

My husband started baking bread and when it comes out of the oven, he’d rather have a slice with butter and a glass of milk than ice cream!

  27. Way to go on your bread! It looks great!

  28. PinkCat says:

That bread looks great. I bet it tastes amazing. The book sounds very interesting too. I shall look to by it for my eager-baking husband. x

That’s a pretty loaf! I have a bread machine and sometimes take the dough out and shape loaves and bake them in the oven. Looks so much nicer that way!

  34. kelly harp says:

that looks beautiful! i’ve been using the “healthy bread in 5 minutes…” book & love it. isn’t it so incredible to eat bread you made with your own hands? there’s definitely something amazing about it.

  35. Sheryl says:

Funny you should post this, because I’m making Pioneer Woman’s cinnamon bread as I type this! (I think this is my 4th time making it.) I, too, am preferring more handcrafted/home made as I get older. My family appreciates it, too.

  36. The bread looks beautiful! I recently found a recipe online for super easy artisan bread. I make a loaf of it every other day. My kids complain now if they have to eat the “store stuff”. I guess it’s nice to be needed! I’ll have to look for that book at the library. Even though I like my recipe, it’s always nice to see new ideas or find new techniques to apply.

  37. Cheryl says:

We love this recipe! I love pulling it out to feed hungry teens. It makes great pizza!

  38. Ah, bread. Sigh. I used to love making real bread. It was one of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday! Now that I’m grain-free, I’m trying to find a GF option that’s as satisfying. Lovely picture, too!

  42. Krista says:

  44. that looks really good…..

  45. That bread looks SO yummy! I’m on a low carb diet and I almost cried when I look at that picture because I would do just about anything right now for a piece of that bread (with butter and cup of coffee, of course!)

  46. Jenny W says:

I, too, love, love, LOVE Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day! And I just posted today about a bread recipe I found that is just as good and probably even easier (if that’s possible!).

  47. Love that posted this. :) I love that it’s inspired so many that making bread…just with your hands and junk is so easy!

  48. Christie says:

So totally random, but just got my Ballard Design catalog in the mail today, as I am perusing through with my totally needed morning coffee, I came across this…

    http://a248.e.akamai.net/f/248/9086/10h/origin-d1.scene7.com/is/image/ballarddesigns/SC415_main?$w400$

immediately I thought of you! “New” & “Exclusive to Ballard!! Did you make the cushions for your chair or find them elsewhere? Totally seeing a Nester kickback here :-) Had to share, happy Friday!

    P.S. the bread looks amazing!

    • nester says:

oh wow! I love that you all let me know about stuff like that–they are SO similar to mine! I got mine years ago from Value Village I think $350 for a chair and ottoman together {the best price I could find}. I’ve been thinking about painting them and recovering the fabric for something more fun

  49. DeAnna says:

I have been baking bread from that book too!!! I LOVE it. Just made up 2 more loaves last night gave one away with a jar of homemade orange marmalade for a friend’s birthday. Easy peasy!

  50. I love fresh baked bread. I make bread often and have grown to really dislike store bought bagged bread. So yummy when fresh bread is warm.
