Prepping for Guests

Mom and Dad and Emily and her man and three children and little dog are all coming to our house in a few days.  I LOVE having them over.  LOVE it.  But, I admit, I’m the kind of girl who needs special motivation if I’m going to clean my house.  I’ve found two tricks that work every time for me. Find what works for you and use them.

Trick One:: Get something new.

No, I don’t mean a new sofa, although how fun would that be?  It can be as simple as a new candle, or a $4.99 bunch of mums, but, it’s amazing how a vase of flowers on the table can make me want to get the entire kitchen clean.  It’s a small price to pay for enjoying the process and getting that ding a ling kitchen CLEAN.

Here are some things I recently purchased that are motivating me to clean today, this is not a sponsored post although, I am mentioning a sponsor, I just cannot help myself, but I hope you appreciate my recommendations, I love it when real people recommend stuff, I still use the Luxurious Volume line of hair care from John Frieda thanks to a thumbs up a year ago from Boo Mama.

Here we go:

1. Bona Hardwood Floor Mop

Back when I had my slipcover party the girls all helped me clean up and I remember Lily saying she would mop my floor but only if I had a Bona, I think she was kidding but I didn’t have one and my floors didn’t get mopped.  Instead, an entire conversation was  started about this Bona mop thing I’ve never heard of and how great they all thought it was and how much they liked cleaning their floors. ?! I forgot about it until two weeks ago when I got on facebook and asked Lily what that was again and promptly went out to Lowe’s  and spent my $30 on it.  She was right, I love it.  Dear Bona, do you need a spokesperson?

2. Candle Mash Ups

I like to burn two or more flavors at a time.  Today, it’s Yankee Candle’s Vanilla Cupcake paired with Mrs. Meyer’s Iowa Pine. It’s so Christmasy and yummy.  And if you try to candles and they stink together just blow them out.

3. Nuts

I love putting nuts {in their shell} out in pretty bowls.  They are decoration and food.

4. Music

I’m in the market for some new Christmas music right now, but, once I download a few fresh songs from iTunes and add them to the Christmas playlist my mood magically changes when I hear them.  {You are listening to Christmas music as you clean for Thanksgiving, right?}

5. Cleaning supplies that I actually like using.

You know what I’m going to say, right?  Mrs. Meyer’s.  Oh,  that Mrs. Meyer’s you must try her products if you haven’t yet.  If you only want to start with one item might I suggest the Lemon Verbena Countertop Spray?  Excellent choice, ma’am.  {insert mental picture of me in a waiter’s outfit holding a metal tray with a bottle of Mrs. Meyer’s wrapped in a spotless white chamois carefully titled so you can read the label}.  {Disclaimer, I am actually working with Mrs. Meyer’s and I’ll include a coupon at the end of this post~WHOOOPIE but they are not paying me to talk about them~ yet}. My plans to take over the Mrs. Meyer’s world have begun though {also insert evil laugh and sounds of a spray bottle}

oh weird color, please sun, come out so I can take better photos and it bothers me so that my dog doesn’t curl his tail around his body like normal dogs.

Trick two:: Move things around/change up the decor

Again with the new feeling.  Apparently I thrive on little changes.

1. I clear off the kitchen counters and put away any lingering clutter/tchotchkes to make room for the Third Annual Making of PW’s Cinnamon Rolls with Mom and Emily.  PW is not paying me to talk about her. Although, I may need to fine her for the pounds I put on each year due to her recipes.

2. Consider each room {especially the public areas} and think about if they are set up best for lots of people.  I ended up moving bigger table out of our front room into an empty space in the family room.

3. Pull out photos from Thanksgiving past and put them around the house. Beware, looking through old photos can get you off task, save this project for night time when you don’t have the energy to clean but still want to get something done.

4. Bring in the extra leaf to the table and use a simple/low centerpiece {sticks and candles usually work for me}

5. Wash the throws and place them strategically around the house.

And for your buying pleasure, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day is now available at Walmart.  I checked it out and it’s by far the best selection of Mrs. Meyer’s items in my town.  And, here’s a $1 off coupon for to use while you are shopping~there’s one over there on the sidebar too that will stay up all month.

Now, tell me what Christmas song {include the version/artist so I can download the right one} is your current favorite?

  1. Anything from Diana Krall’s christmas album! So cozy. I also love the Barenaked Ladies/Sarah Mclachlan version of “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.” It’s happy, it’s jazzy, it’s beautiful.
    xo
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. Omg! Just found your blog from Jones Design Company and I love it. I have holiday guests coming as well and I did a small Home Goods run and it’s amazing what a few new throw pillows and towels can do for your psyche. My favorite holiday songs by far are from Harry Conick JR. Frosty the Snowman is great! Great Blog!!!!!

  3. I recently got married & moved into my husband’s house. He has hardwood floors AND a Bona mop which I’ve quickly fallen in love with! I actually look forward to when mopping the floors!!

  4. Christmas Music – David Nevue – O Come Emmanuel

    I love your blog. It inspires me. Especially the slip covers. Now only if i could over come my habit of not finishing projects.

    Have a blessed Holiday season.

  5. I have been looking for an easier way to mop my hardwood floors so I am on my way to check out the Bona mop. Thanks for the introduction. We have company coming for Thanksgiving so I also have to get motivated to clean. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
    Hugs,
    Sherry

  6. that lemon verbena cleaning spray and those candles have chemicals in them I would not want to breathe. check those labels. I use Bi-O-Kleen all purpose spray. Also their laundry detergent and Bac-Out which is an excellent odor and stain remover.

  7. So enjoying the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah ~ a triumphant rejoicing in the birth of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ! What a way to celebrate Thanksgiving!!!

    Thanks you Nester for the helpful tips. And thanks especially for the coupon.
    May you experience the gratitude of the season as you embrace the warmth of your family ~

  8. i am *loving* “hallelujah (light has come)” by barlow girl right now. such amazing harmonies, and of course the wonderful message.

  9. I have been listening to Christmas music while preparing for Thanksgiving and I recommend you download “Song for a Winter’s Night” by Sarah McLachlan. It is beautiful.

  10. I love love love Martina McBride’s “O Holy Night” – it literally will send chills up your spine. (Though she is a country artist, her Christmas album is not all twangy). AND! as close runners up, I also like Faith Hill’s “A Baby Changes Everything” from her Joy to the World album, and “Bells Will Be Ringing” by Aaron Neville (I think it’s Aaron Neville). Hope you have a great Turkey Day! I love your ideas! My favorite color is that beautiful sea green blue that’s throughout your house. I had painted my living/dining room that color, so you have been so helpful in helping me incorporate “winter” colors with my summer color scheme.

  11. your dog is prolly gettin dookie spots on your rug…

  12. Have you downloaded Dave Barnes new Christmas CD. Pretty good one.

  13. Bing Crosby’s White Christmas,,,all time favorite,,after that Johnny Mathis’ It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,,,

  14. Wal-Mart would not take the coupon :( something about the barcode being in the wrong spot. Oh well I will use it at Target. Would much rather shop there anyway.

    I could listen to Christmas music all year long :)

  15. I Love Casting Crowns whole Christmas album(My kids call me a groupie). But seriously, the whole album is the bomb diggitty!!

  16. Almost forgot, Sara Groves I think its called, It’s true, Is one of my all time faves!! Listen to it all year long. To be with you on that album is also very good! <3

  17. Sara Groves whole Christmas album is my absolute favorite and I am picky about Christmas music. I also love Point of Grace’s Christmas album and Michael W. Smith’s Christmastime.

    Kelly

  18. Current and all-time favorite is Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Song.” Such a silky voice and always conjurs images of sitting in a dark room with only the Christmas lights glowing, by a fire (of course), sipping hot chocolate and waiting for Christmas morning. And at some point you should listen to Skip Ewing’s song, “It Wasn’t His Child”–a GREAT mood setter for the Christmas season!

  19. ok I’m obsessing,,,since I sent in my all time favorite already Bing Crosby’s White Christmas,,and Johhny Mathis’ It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas,,,well I forgot the other two favs,,,Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song,,,along with Andy Williams It’s the most wonderful time of the year,,Enjoy!!!

  20. Hi, I had problems with Walmart accepting my coupon. In fact they didn’t. Don’t know what the issue was except it had something to do with the barcode. Anyone else?

  21. Amy Grant’s “Breath of Heaven”

  22. Silent Night by Priscilla Ahn. Beautiful.

  23. I’m a hopeless sentimental sap-oldies like NatKingCole & Bing Crosby (which is why I also love HarryConnickJr’s crooning); the Nutcracker Suite full-blast in its entirety; Handel’s Messiah in its entirety (belting the alto part of the HallelujahChorus till the dogs hide); and in honor of my KY momma, Elvis (born on her bday)and TennesseeErnieFord. The classical is a bow to Dad,who played sousaphone in about ten “TubaChristmas” performances. But my favorite two genres mixed (and even my elderly folks enjoyed them our last couple ChristmasEves@home!) – Trans Siberian Orchestra! Winds me up to get it all done, and I wind down with the crooners. Jim Brickman (or”&Friends”) is great,too. Excellent pianist! Cleveland Rocks, but with a world-renowned orchestra and home to a variety of musicians&vocalists, have to throw some kudos to local “produce”, and I do love Jim’s work! Hope some of you will give him a listen. :) -s-

  24. One more… Mercy Me “Christmas Sessions” CD – great songs, lovely version of Silent Night and a good “Rockin’ Around the Christmas tree.” The whole album is great!

  25. I am obsessed with your blog!! I so wish that I had a wall like that above my couch where I could arrange pictures or plates like that.. You are amazing!! xx Liz marie
