For years, years, I’ve been meaning to buy me some chalk markers. They write so much darker, better, stronger than regular old, boring, 1800′s chalk.
I bought mine at Michael’s craft store. This package of 4 {my boys had already snatched the other white one by the time I took this photo} was $20 I think. But I used my 40% off coupon so that was a good price. They hide these chalkers back with the real markers that are sold individually in the art section. I think you can also find them on amazon and other online shops.
You can be one of those good organized moms and write out your menu with it. I feel so much better about myself.
My son drew this on his chalkboard–look how great the red shows up.
This chalkboard used to be a clock but the hands fell off. So I just stuck on some chalk board paper. I think you can get it on amazon as well.
small, bad photo but you get the idea
I wish I had invented chalk markers. Coffee houses everywhere have been using them for years and one day, I feel chalk may become extinct. There’s no dust with the markers, all you have to do is wipe it off with a damp cloth. I also wish I were selling these because I totally believe that every house out there with a chalkboard will have its life changed by these markers.

If you want to buy your markers online, I did find out one of my affiliates, Mister Art, carries like 10 different colors of chalk markers. I haven’t tried this brand but, the choices–there are many. To look at them, click on the button underneath these words and then once you are at the website, search for “chalk markers”.
I’m so excited about the Blessings Party at my house on May 15th~there is still room for you if you can come. Also, some of you emailed me about hosting a party, I’ll be forwarding your email to the right people. And, for those of you who MUST order that cloche or something else that you found irresistible, Mrs. U is hosting an ONLINE Blessings party as we speak. If you order from her, it helps their family get closer to their adoption goal. So, if you can’t come to my party, check out hers

I have never seen these before! I did always wonder how restaurant chalk boards always looked so bright. Now I know. I will be heading out today to buy some. Thanks.
yes, and, if you brush by them with your shirt, it doesn’t erase!
Haha – I love that you’re keeping it real: “asparagus if I feel like it.”
I had no idea these existed – thanks!
Super cool. . . I had never heard of chalk markers before, but I had always wondered why chalk boards at restaurants always look so marvelous. I’ll just have to get myself some now :]
I’ve been meaning to try chalk markers for a while….maybe I should just take the plunge! I do the chalkboard art at my best friend’s super cute cafe…and we’ve been too cheap to indulge in the markers. It’s a business write off, right?! ;-)
OK, I didn’t even know of these, very cool!! Thanks for sharing! Have a wonderful Tuesday!
Take care
Kristin
What?!?! You’d think with all the chalkboard projects I’ve been doing I’d know about these! I must live under a rock…wow. crazy. no dust?! I’ve got to get my hands on some. Janell
You can use these on dry erase boards as well?
I believe so. It says they can be used on windows, mirrors, plastic, ceramics and the like.
Wow! I had no idea that these existed. Maybe now my sons can have that chalkboard wall that I’ve always wanted them to have but dreaded cleaning up after!
I keep meaning to look for these chalk markers when I’m at Michael’s, and at least now I know which aisle they are in {thank you!}. Of course, it would be good if I got my free find chalkboard out of the garage and hung it up somewhere!
I did love that cloche you posted, but after visiting the website, I hope the price listed is a typo {$84.00}.
That price I think is for the stand and cloche together. As an avid cloche collector I will say it’s by far, the nicest one I have and is HUGE:: 9 inches wide and almost 20 inches high.
but yes, if somehow I could find one at a yard sale for $5 I would totally buy that one instead. One can always hope!
These are amazing-it would have been wonderful to have these when I was teaching Pre-K..but I love the menu board for the kitchen as well.
Thanks for sharing!
don’t worry – as long as there are cheap calcium supplements, chalk will never become extinct.
Gasp…I had no idea….it is like a whole new world…one that doesn’t erase when I touch it….
I’ve never heard of those, but I plan to get some on my next trip to Michael’s. Oh, and I like your “whatever you want to make yourself” menu selection. We have that in our house too, but we call it YOYO (You’re On Your Own) and so long as it doesn’t happen too often, the kids actually like it.
We call it “fend for yourself night”…..ah…I love those!!
Chalk markers?! Genius!! {And why didn’t I know about them?}
Thanks for posting this! I made chalkboard labels for my pantry months ago and it looked great when I first did it, but now the words are mostly rubbed off the containers! I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me at the time that that would happen?!
Genius. Have to find out if I can get them in Norway?!? If not my BF is travelling to the US in may…
Having been a teaching I thought the EXPO marker was the best thing to replace chalk — that stuff gets on the kids, your clothes, everything. But THIS is the answer; since teaching is part of who I am I, too, have chalkboards of various sizes scattered around the house. These are going to be part of my next Micheal’s run! Also — I SO wish I live close to be part of your par-tay! Love that stuff
I have been using these for almost a year now. I love them! And they last much longer than I expected -I am still on my first pack and I update the menu board daily! However, you seem to have a very expensive Michael’s. I also buy mine there but in upstate NY they are only $12 for a four pack.
Thanks for posting this…:)
I have that same exact pack. It took me forever to find them in a store, even after calling their office and asking where to find them. I would have ordered them online but their website wanted $12 for shipping! I wanted them so badly I was tempted to ask the barista at Starbucks if I could have one! (kidding)
My Michael’s had them so well hidden that most of the sales people had never seen them!
I KNOW! It took 2 clerks to find them. They knew they had them but couldn’t figure out where!
I almost spit out my coffee when I read this post! Why haven’t I known about these markers before? Seriously, I am running out this morning to get some. Is it wrong to be so excited over chalk markers? Thanks for sharing!
I used to work in a cafe and we just had a plain old whiteboard and the markers were always rubbing off. This is awesome! I’ve been wanting to do a chalkboard wall in our game room, but my hubby is worried about the chalk dust. Problem solved!
Who knew such a wonderful thing existed?! I will be RUNNING to Michaels to get me some! THANKS
I didn’t know about these either. Where did you get the white plaque/plate thingy that you wrote “Menu…” on?
It’s from Blessings Unlimited!!!
Thanks for posting this! I’ve been wanting some like that for awhile now, but hadn’t been to look in Michaels yet. Now my chalk board can be fancy too.
Oh my word!!!! Dear Nester, thank you SO very much for sharing a link to my blog!!! I was shocked when I saw that my blog was so busy today and voila it linked back to you!! I had a good cry after I read that you shared about my “party”!!! Thank you SOOOOOO very much!!!
His,
Mrs. U
I had no idea these existed! I put off making a chalkboard because I didn’t want the mess of rubbing up against it. Now this solved it! After being asked yesterday if I wanted the senior discount (and me almost flying across the counter to strangle the woman) I’m trying not to sound old! Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one that had not heard of these. Whew!
I’ve never heard of these before either! Thank you for posting this!
Oooh I love this! Just what I need- I have always wanted a red chalk that actually looks red.
I had no idea these existed! I hate chalk, so this is perfect. I can’t believe I’ve been stuck in the 1800′s for so long. Thanks for bringing me up to date. I think I need to make a chalkboard somewhere in my house.
-FringeGirl
I’ve had my eyeballs on some, too. I have accumulated many chalkboards here lately and the dust makes me crazy.
Looks like they’re hit with everyone in the fam!
I bought those but I found that they were hard to wipe off and left behind a shadow on my chalkboard. Is there a secret I don’t know about when it comes to removing them? Help!
Have you tried a damp cloth? That’s always worked great for me!
These are great, it’s what we used at Starbucks to write the promo signs with. Very easy to use. You can write on other surfaces too.
This is a great idea. I have seen those coffee cups mugs and thought they were a great idea but thought the chalk would rub off easily, but now with these markers that would totally work. What a neat teacher gift! Thanks for sharing. Come check out my new blog….www.ms-smartie-pants.blogspot.com
This is so silly, but I just got really {really!} excited about chalk markers!! I made a note inmy Blackberry to buy them at Michael’s tomorrow – with my coupon of course :)
Thanks for sharing!!
I live under a rock (apparently) and did not know these existed! So excited that chalk dust will be a distant memory (as soon as I can get to the ‘big city’ where there is a craft store).
Chalk markers would be perfect for my kitchen! I have a chalkboard back splash and using regular sidewalk chalk is so messy.
i’m cracking up because i have that same clock, and the SAME thing happened to me, the hands fell off … and i love the frame of it SO MUCH that i could never part with it. i was staring at it YESTERDAY and was trying to decide what to do with it! thanks for the inspiration!
chalk markers!?!?? I had no idea they existed! I have resisted putting any type of chalkboard in my house because of the mess regular chalk makes, I may not resist anymore
I was just looking at Walmart for these the other day. They didn’t have them {not surprised} so I’ll try one of your sources. I love these things!
Thanks for sharing these! I’ve been wondering about these all along…I HATE chalk dust!!!! (which my girls love to make and collect and spread all over the house). I assume these don’t make dust, right? (or minimal dust?)
I’m going to cross my fingers and hope that I can find these at our craft store.
I had no idea these existed! I’ve wanted to try the chalkboard surfaces, but have been afraid of the mess.
I had no idea chalk markers even existed! I want some now!
And by the way, I LOVE Hilton Head, it’s so peaceful and so exciting at the same time. Have fun!
Oohh…I need me some of those chalk markers! And “Dinner – whatever you decide to make for yourself” – at our house we call that YOYO – “Your On Your Own”!
Thanks so much for the Mister Art tip. They have great prices. I’ve heard of the chalk ink before and always have wanted it, but usually when I’m somewhere where I think about it, it’s not the somewhere where they sell them!! I promptly went to the site and ordered mine. I love chalkboards so this will be fantastic. Here’s the link to my blog post about it: http://bananasanddamaskinteriors.blogspot.com/2010/04/new-thing-for-me.html
Have a great day,
Anna
Have em, love em, been meaning to blog them for weeks!
I have never seen these before, what a wonderful idea! I have where people have transformed everyday objects with the chalkboard paint, but never the markers. Makes me what to do thrifting to finding something to make! And I love your Menu choices…LOL!!!
I used to work for the most well known of those coffee houses that use the chalk pens :) and, I love them!! They are FABULOUS! They wipe off super easy and last long time. We update those boards almost everyday (or at least redraw stuff on them) and spill coffee on them, drop them in sanitizer water buckets etc and they still last about 4 months. I doubt they get that much use at home. Great buy! :)
Thanks for the tip that they have these at Michaels now! I had looked there in the past, but apparently in the wrong section, and assumed they didn’t carry them. I just went in yesterday and asked and I found them! Though they were out of stock. Sad. But I’m one step closer to scoring some with birthday money and a coupon!
