Breakables and Boys

wall color :: Sherwin Williams Comfort Gray

I have this very breakable shelf that holds a very breakable and already twice repaired urn that holds a very heavy coral..

…that I got from ebay but it was a little pink and smokey and old and dusty…

…so I washed it and then whitewashed it….

…and to be safe I pumped some hot glue onto the bottom of the urn…

…and now they won’t come down until I decide it’s time.

What have you used hot glue for lately?

He-he! i have this shelf ont eh same wall as my garage door… The one that gets slammed whenever an offender/offendee comes tearing in from the sandbox/swingset upset. While we teach nto to slam, I also used hot glue and now my lil porcelein bird isn’t gonna come down unless an earthquake of great magnitude happens, lol
Boys and breakables- love it. i wonder- can I hot glue my lil antique lamp to my table??????

  2. Anita says:

I love your bouquet of coral! I don’t have any that big, wish I did. My glue gun hasn’t been used much lately. Hmmm, time to drag it out I guess!

  3. Ashley Ann says:

That is a fantastic idea to paint that coral! I don’t know why I never thought of that. I have this GORGeous piece of coral but it just doesn’t match, now I can whitewash it! I paint everything…I am so surprised at myself for not thinking to paint that. Thanks for posting this!!

And the last thing I used my glue gun for? Repairing my daughters Princess Crown! :)

  4. Good tip!!! My girls can get kind of rowdy when they decide it’s “dancing” time (which more closely resembles some kind of frenzied tribal festival than actual dancing), but I did get a plate/plate stand knocked off my baker’s rack once. The last thing I used hot glue for was when I made-over a Spring Bunny frame. :)

  5. I need to make a hot glue repair to a candle holder broken by flying legos.

  6. rachel says:

LOL! I use hot glue for everything! My last post was about a canopy that I used hot glue on for my daughter’s bedroom. I also hot glued a sign onto my master bedroom wall when I re-decorated in there too! I L-O-V-E your blog.

  7. I smiled when I read your blog! My mother-in-law had a candle holder that was always getting knocked off the wall by her two sons. As adults they were still gluing it back together for her and grumbling. After her death, my husband got the candle holder. He lovingly wrapped it up and gave it to his brother for Christmas and that began the tradition. For years they each came up with more elaborate ways of presenting the “present.” My mother-in-law would love knowing how much joy her home decor continued to give!

Love the wall color – what room did you use that in?

  9. Love this post!! I never thought of hot gluing my stuff to the shelf! Genious I tell ya!! BTW — you could title this breakables and boys (&girls)….cause girls cause just as many “oops”…..trust me….

  10. love it! you’re a genius {but we knew that already}!

  11. Smart idea! The last thing I used my hot glue gun for – repairing the ear piece in my 7 year old’s batting helmet. Worked like a charm!

  12. low temp hotglue is the best for securing little figurines! though, my boys aer a bit younger than yours and would find a way to knock the thing down!

  13. Shannon Majors says:

I have also used the white tacky stuff that’s used to hang up posters – works great too!

  14. Richella says:

What a great idea! I’ve used tape a lot of places, but I don’t think I’ve ever hot-glued anything into place. . . but why not? My boys are older now, but that doesn’t mean that accidents don’t happen. I love this way of being prepared. You could be a Boy Scout!

  15. Suzanne says:

Having had 5 boys of my own all I can say is these are the tricks you learn to prevent disaster! Love the shelf. Love the urn. Love the coral. Glad they are safe!

  16. Sissy says:

Okay, so I painted my kitchen Comfort Gray, and my husband said “where’s the paint?” He thought it was just the primer coat that I painted over the red. While I liked what it looked like with our countertop granite (same as Emily’s) cause it picked up the gray tones, it looked unfinshed on the walls. I ended up adding a quart of dark green to it and now have a more pear green color that looks nice.

And that is my adventure with painting my kitchen! LOL.

  17. Carol says:

I cannot say that I have hot glued anything in place but I have velcroed many things. Several of my favorite pitchers in my kitchen have velcro on the bottom. It is great for when you actually want to remove them to use or dust.

  18. very good advice for people living in a home, where a pillow fight could start anytime…

  19. Misty says:

I have 2 boys….and let me just say…this is genius!!!! LOL
The last thing I used my glue gun for was an egg decorating contest at school!!!!

  20. My oldest son and I just got done with a “jet” made from cardboard and probably a pund of hot glue. It is for his preschool’s “transportation parade”. It was really fun to spend some one on one time with him, but man those glue guns get hot!!!

  21. kel says:

I haven’t glue gunned in a while…there’s something off-putting about the warning wrapper on the gun about how it’s outlawed in California-made of toxic something…I need to rip that label off! I’m just on here because the picture of your glue gun had me howling!!!!!!! Give that baby a badge of honor! So there, California!!!

  22. em says:

Haha…you could just about hot glue AnYtHiNg!!!!!

  23. Kelley says:

I used my hot glue gun the other day to make my Shabby Brown-Eyed Tangerine (brooch)… mostly crafting with it. Love that tool!

  24. Danielle H says:

adding pin backs to my flower brooches. it cut my production time in half! i was previously hand-sewing everything together, but it’s not really necessary – er, at least that’s what I’ve decided!

  25. Erin says:

fantastic idea. i have 2 boys (ages 4 and 1) and i am always struggling with keeping things in order AND unbroken! great idea! thanks for the post.

  26. Vicki says:

Love it!! Just last night my sister was asking me if I would help her paint her coral!! I’m not sure what type of paint to use. Any suggestions? What did you use for your whitewashing? Thanks so much!! I love your blog…read it everyday!!

    • nester says:

Water down any kind of paint you have. I would have used spray paint but I was out, so I added water to that 79 cent acrylic paint in the photo.

  27. Cindy says:

Hot glue, now there’s a thought. I’ve used the sticky putty substance before, but usually I’m not brave enough to have a lot of breakables around with 3 kids, two cats, and now a puppy. Yikes! I do have a set of russian stacking dolls (don’t remember there actual name) that I love and have put high up on a shelf. Well, one day the kids asked if they could play with them, so I took them down. Big mistake! Our other dog, who was a puppy at the time, was eyeing the dolls, and before I knew it the dog had one in his mouth! Now, the “baby” has been permanently marked (with teeth) by a dog. So, now they stay on their little shelf and don’t come down to play anymore.

  28. Smart gal! ;-)

  29. Pam says:

Love following your blog. You might be interested in Quakehold, used to hold valuables in place, available in putty or gel. The putty is waxy and sticky while the gel is clear. I feel the putty holds better. If you live in a quake prone area, your local Bed, Bath and Beyond might stock it. Otherwise, Amazon has it at: http://www.amazon.com/Quakehold-88111-Museum-Putty/dp/B0002VA9NA

    Good luck!

  30. Johanna says:

I use my hot-glue gun to “sew” the patches on my son’s karate uniform. I like to think of it as my patches mis-treatment. :)

  31. karin says:

love your blog – and that coral rocks!
question for you – i am looking for a blue/grey for our master bedroom but it is north facing – would the comfort grey be too blah? i don’t want it too blue, blues and greys are very hard! any suggestions?
    thanks

    • nester says:

Karin, my sister has the colors darker and lighter than CG–Oyster Bay and Sea Salt, she’s used them in two different houses with all different light and I’ve LOVED every room that any shade of this color has been used in.

  32. Michele says:

You have such talent! I love your blog!

  33. What *haven’t* I used a glue gun for lately? Love your coral in an urn.

  34. Lindsay says:

This is a really good idea! I’ve also used a hot gun recently to hem curtains because I find it “sticks better” than using the iron-on hemming strips. Call me crazy, but whatever works, right?!?!

    xoxo,
    Lindsay

  35. Michelle says:

    Genius!!!

  36. Laurie says:

Perfect timing – our 2 little grandsons are moving back to live near us – time to get out the glue gun?!

  37. kristin says:

Hot glue rocks! I use it for Karate Patches, Boy Scout Uniform Merit Badges, re-attaching the covered buttons on my couch when my kids pull them off, attaching dust ruffle mistreatments to our beds, adding fringe to window mistreatments, and attaching decorative paper to shelf backs a la the Nester. I even used my hot glue gun last Christmas when I covered a tacky, old plastic wreath with real holly and pine fronds to create my dream Williamsburg style front door wreath. This year, I plan to add real apples and a pineapple attached with–what else?- a hot glue gun.

  38. Nadir@hodgepodge says:

HAHA! When my older sister was a toddler she was fond of “playing”/touching this gorgeous marble & mahogony coffee table with beautiful colored glass dishes & sculptures sitting on top. After touching them & getting her hand smacked by my mother every time they came for a visit; my grandmother felt so bad that she ruined the table & glass by super gluing the dishes & sculptures to the table top so my sister would no longer be able to move them :-) They’re still there after 30 years too! That’s the love of a granny for you. :-)

  39. what a great idea! a good cat deterrant as well I am sure :)

  40. Jessica says:

Didn’t have Gorilla Glue, so I used hot glue to temporarily adhere a glass plate to a glass candle holder, thus making a cheap and beautiful cake stand. It worked great for the party, but came apart in the wash.

  41. Jessica says:

As I speak, I am looking at a plate my cat knocked off the stand and cracked in half. It was very pretty. Im thinking of tacky glue, which in some cases is just as good as hot glue :)
it is funny really, You try to baby proof your house and move things up high away from curious little hands and then your animals end up breaking them.

  42. i just hung a bunch on plates on the wall right beside our back door (which gets slammed a LOT with 3 boys) using your hot glue/paperclips trick. So far, so good! thanks!!

  43. Curtis & Sherrie says:

We raised two boys, who are now young men, and we never had to glue down anything. There were touch things and no touch things in our house. We tried to make the touch things outnumber the no touch things, but we always had things around on tables and the walls. There were things that got broken but we never put things away we just were diligent about teaching our boys how to live in a graciously appointed home. But I did chuckle at the gluing of the vase to the shelf, I would have not thought of that!

    • The Nester says:

you know, more than likely, it would be ME who would knock the shelf off the wall–one of the fixes from the vase was from me dropping it.

      clutzy I am.

      • T says:

Uh huh…that’s me too. I’m the klutz in this house. No worries about the kid, cats or husband. Just me knocking things down and breaking ‘em. Hot glue and E6000 are my BESTEST ever friends!

  44. Lindy Bartell says:

I just used hot glue instead of tape to wrap a wedding gift that has to make it through a plane trip without coming undone (the ribbon, too). As i was doing it I thought, “Am I just super anal about my gifts being wrapped perfectly?”

  45. Well, thanks for asking. I just whipped up some curtains for our master bath this afternoon. I burned myself, but they were worth it.

(note: I did try last night with my new sewing machine to no avail).

I’m much handier with ye olde glue.

  46. Laura says:

I have not had to use hot glue for anything unusual lately, but with 3 boys I have had plenty of things broken! I don’t know how old your are but they go from breaking things to jumping to touch the ceiling or top of the doorways. It’s always something with boys, but you got to love them anyway! :) Great idea by the way!

  47. Amanda says:

LOVE that idea! I’ve never thought of trying something like that. We just don’t decorate with breakables, at least within reach of the kids. I might have to change it up a bit!

  48. Heather says:

Very nice! I’ve got two boys of my own – I understand about the breakablity (spelling??) – that’s why there will not be breakables in my house for the next few or twenty years… Though I hadn’t thought of hot glueing things – good inspiration – I saw the pictures literally nailed to the wall in tgi fridays and cracker barrel and thought that was a bit much – but hot glue is a lot less obtrusive, still does the job and probably / maybe peels off with much work when you want to change things up … boy now you’ve got me thinking – thanks!!

  49. The Scooper says:

Funny you should ask. This week I hot-glued the bottom of a hanging-planter-basket thingy to my front door. The top of it is hanging on one of those wreath-hangers. I just discovered a robin’s nest with 5 eggs tucked down in the fake foliage and I wanted to prevent the basket from swinging all over the place every time my kids flung the door open. Who knew hot glue could save an entire bird family?

  50. Angela says:

Wow I have 3 boys and have never thought to try actually using hot glue to hold something on a shelf. I LOVE it! I will totally try this. I usually use crazy glue to repair the things they’ve broken. Today though I used crazy glue to glue soda tabs to picture frames so I could hang them on the wall.
