Books on the Ground

Books on the ground

Books on the ground

Lookin’ like a fool with my books on the ground

With the pages gettin folded

Books turned sideways

Call your self a book lover, fussin at my kids cuz the books on the ground

Put those books away….I give up!

In the wise words of Randy “I’m gonna find some belts after this.”

I figured out our problem wasn’t too many books or my lazy kids, it’s the fact that we have NO PLACE in our family room to put books.  It’s taken me six months to come to this simple conclusion.  I’m now on the lookout for a short bookcase from the goodwill.

Is there an issue in your home that could be solved with a simple solution?

  1. I’ve had the same issues ! I tried recovering a few for decorative purposes, but most end up everywhere… I’ve been struggling where to put them all, then I just found a sideboard at the local thrift with plenty of storage for books ! I’m going to paint it and put it under the window in my master bedroom so all my reading material will be in one place…. you know, those books that I’ve started and I’m on chapter 3. All of those !

  2. Funny you should post this today. After much procrastination, I spent Saturday afternoon weeding out books. I was so tired of having them piled everywhere. Now the bookshelves in my office can breathe–and so can I when I look at them. Now to get rid of the stacks of no-longer-wanted books that are in the floor….

    BEST. POST. EVER.

  4. I’m so glad you posted this. Many of my friends on facebook have become fans of “pants on the ground” and I was beginning to wonder. I feel fully in tuned to pop culture now :).

  5. A short bookshelf is a great idea! I got one recently at my local thrift store with great bamboo and wooden applique details…all it needed was a good coat of antique white spray paint and it was perfect for our small hallway and got all those books off of my cluttered flat surfaces! Hope you find the perfect one!

  6. I use baskets for the majority of the books in this house…my 2 toddlers don’t really grasp books on the shelf yet.

  8. You know, I loved you before, but this has sealed the deal.
I look like a fool with my books on the ground, too. Or really, stacked high on my bed side table… as if I don’t fall directly to sleep when my head hits the pillow. Who am I fooling?
Can’t wait to see your solution!! ‘Cause I’m sure I’ll be copying it.
With my books on the ground.

  9. Gussy says:

hahahahaha. i heart you and your funniness <3

  10. You crack me up. Now I’ll have that awful song stuck in my head all day…

  11. My kids don’t put their books on the bookshelf, even though it’s right there in front of them! Drives me nuts! Till I figured out that neatly squeezing in a book, or trying to line them up to put away on the shelf, then they all keep falling over, was frustrating them to no end. So for Christmas we got them a PBKids book rack thing, where the covers face out. Easy-peasy! I’ll just keep rotating their books every week, like I do now, and they should be a snap to put neatly away!

  12. hahaha! Love that. Too funny. We have a beautiful wood island in our kitchen that is forever getting mail and paperwork of all kinds piled on it by my dear husband. I finally bought a cute little basket and each day I put the piles of his junk in it. And then when it gets full, I transfer the pile from basket to his office. And then once it’s on his desk, he realizes just how much he piles up on the island, but he continues to do it. Sigh. At least the junk-slash-paperwork looks so much better in a basket on the island than in a messy pile.

    BAHAHAAAAA! This cracked me up!!!!

…and as a bookaholic myself, I have books EVERYWHERE… :-( I never seem to have enough bookshelves! And yet, I can’t resist buying more. They need BA meetings (bookaholics anonymous). :-)

  14. Holly says:

That is too funny! Thanks for letting me know what you think of the floor! Everytime I go upstairs I cant believe that we pulled it off!

  15. Grace says:

I love baskets for frequently used/read books and magazines…I found some really lovely ones at Joann’s fabric store for 50% off and snatched a few up. Plus, it is super easy for my toddler to put his books away in a basket…much easier for him than lining them up on a shelf. I would love a larger bookcase for my other books tho…so I can’t help you out much there. Good luck finding one!

    Blessings, Grace

Laundry doesn’t go away with 7 people in the house. That was a funny post! Thanks for the laugh.

    LAUGHED…OUT…LOUD!

    so funny!

  20. Do you know that books are the ONLY thing I’m ok with being on the ground, or spread around in any sloppy way? For me, books, in any shape or way, get a pass.

  21. Staples has their bookcases on sale right now. We just got 5 nice looking (cherry wood grain) bookcases for a little over $100. The seem really sturdy and look really good. That also included FREE shipping!

That is too funny, but you are not the only fool!

  24. We recently had a SHOE problem.
With no mudroom and every entrance to our home opening up to a main living area there was just not a PLACE for the shoes.

Thanks to your nesting tips a few months ago I was inspired to find a way to add more seating. I found a set of two chairs at a rummage sale that actually ended up solving that problem indirectly.

I placed the chairs on either side of a hutch that is next to our main entrance, there is room under the legs for me to slide a little bin underneath to house the shoes! Now, there is a place for them to go right as you come in the door and they are not scattered about or the first thing you see when you come in!
I was actually going to send you a ‘thank you’ email and include a photo to show you! ;)
    Thanks!
I am a firm believer that everything should have a place, but finding that place is sometimes not that obvious.

  25. I don’t usually watch AI, but my girls had it on. Ha ha, nice take on the song!

  26. Christine says:

That was outstanding! Thanks for the giggle…I needed that today:-)

  27. HIGH-larious.

  28. LOL! I have had that song stuck in my head all day. Too funny!
That man is going to be a big star for sure.

  29. Candace says:

That totally made me laugh! We have a chair, small table and a lamp in the corner of one of our rooms and next to the chair (also known as the “reading chair” we have a rectangular basket. It’s about 18 in by 6 in or so (that’s my lazy- eyeballing it estimate) and it sits right next to the chair. The basket is ONLY for books- as the chair is only for reading. Hope this helps :).

  30. Books look good anywhere and everywhere in my opinion :)

  31. Krystal says:

That was a good one Nester! ;) You’re too funny.

  32. Laura says:

I needed a solution to the shoes/hats/gloves/sunglasses/etc. that accompany my kids’ jackets… we don’t have an “entry” to speak of, and a tiny hall closet that is just big enough for our vacuum and adult winter coats. So I turned a corner of my family room into a “morning station”.. 3 sets of coat hooks for my three kids (who seem to have 4 jackets each, depending on the weather!), and picked up one of those 9-square cubical organizers at Target. The top shelves hold a catch-all basket for each kiddo for odds-n-ends; a cloth drawer in the middle holds their hats/mittens/swimming things, depending on the season; and the bottom drawer holds their shoes. They are still rather small (ages 3, 6, and 8), so this works for now. Each kiddo has their own color for easy reference. Above this space are two magnetic boards from IKEA that I covered in a fun fabric. This is where I hang special cards and momentos for the kids. It is a fun area of the house, and even the three-year old can put away his shoes! (Now, if only his Dad could remember to do the same!) :-)

  33. (snorting, coughing, eyes watering and peeing a little)

    HAHAHA!!!

  34. Melanie Gore says:

That was beyond funny. I can’t get that song out of my head and now you go and sing it again. LOL!

  35. Ann says:

Our previous home had loads of builtin bookcases and we felt it a personal challenge to fill them up and we did. However, our current home has more space but fewer cases. Husband has taken up woodworking in order to build some masive ones for the living room. A family can never have too many books or bookcases!

  36. HA HA HA HA!! Both my man and I were rollin’ on this one!

I recently decided that instead of continually dragging all our board games from the downstairs to the upstairs (where we usually play them), I am going to keep our favorites in a big, purdy basket upstairs so they are handy.

    Love ya, Nester!

  37. duchess says:

    So funny. I love him.
I could sing the same song with a variety of lyrics from the looks of my house.

  38. Amber says:

This post cracked me up. Last week a bunch of my Facebook friends and friends who tweet were referencing “pants on the ground” and I had no idea what they were talking about! Then one of them tweeted a link to the video and I finally caught on. I laughed as soon as I saw the first two lines of this post!

  39. I was laughing so hard when I saw that on Idol…and then in your post. Funny stuff. I have the same problem in my house. My hubby is an avid reader and there is always a 3 foot stack (no lie) of books next to his bed. I finally put a cabinet there until I can find something better.

  40. Pat says:

Stuff, lying everywhere. I have assigned them each a little drawer from the sofa table and a medium sized basket. I even have a small wooden trunk BUT ipods, DSs, pencils, papers, hoodies are left everywhere. The more I organize, the more I’m foiled. Sometimes I grab everything left lying around and throw it on the floor, forming a pile and inform them that everything in the pile must be put away!

  41. jess says:

Do i spy ‘help meet’? or is that just my imagination? if so…how cool to know that you’ve also read it. :) it’s in my top 5 life changing books list! I love me a good controversial-knock-your-socks-off-make-you-see-things -in -a -whole- new-way-even-if-it-hurts-your-head-a-little read.

    if that’s not ‘help meet’…disregard. :)

  42. Bwhahahah!!! Too funny! One of my favorite quotes of all time is “rich people aren’t cleaner, they just have more storage!”

  43. Heathahlee says:

BAAAAAHAHAHAHA! You just cracked me up!

And we have the same issue with Kiddo’s books…and I only have one child! He loves his Dangerous Book for Boys!

  44. Brooke says:

Baskets, woman, BASKETS! Shelves are pesky. Books can slide, and book height (and depth) is an issue. But baskets are hip, and easy, and can hold LOTS of shapes and sizes.

Did I mention boys have a greater chance of success tossing books in baskets than lining them up neatly on shelves??

Leaning them in old, wooden potting crates is easy too. And that looks rustic and cool. Very cool. :)

  45. Cindy says:

Love it!!! I needed a good laugh tonight. Thanks, Nester! :)
You ask about simple solutions, and one of the things that comes to my mind is a good storage solutions for my plastic food containers. It seems like I have to take out half of the containers and misc. lids just to find a matching lid and container. Ugh! So, a simple solution would be nice.

  46. Gail says:

SO funny! Thank you for making me laugh tonight. Had a tough day (roof leaking, garage flooding…ya know the kinda day that knocks you off your feet) and really needed so giggles!

For simple solutions to books and kids, think ease and convenience. Kids and teens will only clean up when it is simple and easy. They don’t care how Martha would do it! Baskets and bins are good. Little ones can’t read the sides as easy, so facing books forward in a basket is best so they can see the front cover of the book! Then the key is to place this in an easy to reach area. The basket you have in the picture is too deep and too hard to reach. It is easier and faster to leave it out than go digging for what they are looking for.

Cindy, I love the Rubbermaid plastic storage containers that have lids that lock to the bottoms. It has made a huge difference in my cabinets!!!

ha! when i saw the title of your post that song came to mind! too funny. we too have the same books on the ground problem. i’m looking forward to hearing your ideas. at the moment we have a book basket. it’s overflowing.

  49. Richella says:

I am thinking that there are probably a gazillion things in my house that could be fixed with a little solution. You should see my living room, though. More bookshelves than I can count, and still books on the ground.
