Books on the Ground

Books on the ground

Books on the ground

Lookin’ like a fool with my books on the ground

With the pages gettin folded

Books turned sideways

Call your self a book lover, fussin at my kids cuz the books on the ground

Put those books away….I give up!

In the wise words of Randy “I’m gonna find some belts after this.”

I figured out our problem wasn’t too many books or my lazy kids, it’s the fact that we have NO PLACE in our family room to put books.  It’s taken me six months to come to this simple conclusion.  I’m now on the lookout for a short bookcase from the goodwill.

Is there an issue in your home that could be solved with a simple solution?

funny funny funny :) I watched Am Idol last week and laughed so hard when this part came up at the end.. love the take on it with your books on the ground. cheers.

  2. Rene says:

Nester, thank you for always making me laugh! Have a great week…gold in your mouth, hat turned sideways….

  3. Pam says:

I’m laughing out loud right now! Thanks. I needed that. Love your remix!

  4. Shannon says:

Too funny! Hope you find a great bookshelf!

  5. jodi says:

looking for a bookcase too…we’re in desperate need!

  6. Audra Lynn says:

I’m not a big Idol fan, but I actually saw this one…or heard it from the other room, so I actually knew what you were talking about! I love your version. Books mysteriously gravitate to the floor at my house, too, even when they have homes. There are six or seven in my line of sight right now, and I have two bookcases in this room!

  7. Emily says:

My husband is an english teacher so we have TONS of books! I use baskets for the books he uses most often next to his night stand. That way he can just toss them in there and the room still looks clean!

  8. Love your vesion of this song. Giggle – Giggle! My kids and I have been singing this song ever since we heard it.

  9. Paige says:

Laughing out loud right now! I use baskets in different rooms for books and things I am reading or working on. Have a great week!

  10. boomama says:

THE BOOKS, THE BOOKS ARE MY NEMESIS.

I mean, I love that the people around here love to read books and all – but we have nowhere to put them, and I’m forever stumbling over a stack of books. Maybe I need to head to the thrift store and look for a bookshelf. Or some baskets. Or something.

  11. HOW FUNNY! Yeah… we keep books in baskets in the living room (aka family room) but their main location is on a shelf in the hallway.

    Happy Monday, nesterchic!

  12. theadora says:

simple solution for me…get rid of our dining room table and make that area a “mini” living room. We have a great size living room now, but this idea would b helpful when the guys are watching tv and my daughter ad I just wan to do “girly stuff!”

  14. Maureen says:

I’m amazed you don’t already have one! We have at least 20 in our house. So many in fact that we built a library on the second floor. Fortunately bookshelves are easy to come by. They are usually on sale at the start of school. Many students have built their own with boards and bricks. With young children you might want something sturdier. Remember to anchor them to the wall for safety.

    • nester says:

Oh, honey, I have bookshleves 4 of them two are 7 feet high–but none of them work in the family room–or anywhere downstairs for that matter! ahhhh!

      • It’s SO funny and SO true! But come on, don’t we really secretly love looking at all of those books on the ground? They give me some kind of anticipatory rush that looking at a Kindle just lying there wouldn’t.

  15. I LOVE your version of “Pants on the Ground”. That guy was so funny and I’m quite certain we’re going to see him in the finale. What do you think? :-)

I actually did a post today on bookshelves and there’s a really cute idea from Martha Stewart that I included where she uses benches for bookshelves. I want someone to use the idea, so can you please? :-) I don’t really have a place to use the idea myself right now but maybe I’ll come up with one. Have a good day!

  16. Imperfect says:

Hysterical! That song’s been stuck in my head for the last week (the pants version, that is). Hubby and I were dancin’ around the kitchen last night while we cooked dinner singing it.

Anyway, we have lots of books, too. And we continue to acquire them. Fortunately, with an Ikea nearby, we found a relatively inexpensive solution – a six foot bookshelf now resides in the guest bedroom. But I’m pretty sure we’ll have to add another by the summer.

  17. Katie says:

I just moved into my house last week and have no end of unpacking, cleaning and painting. The only easy fix right now is for my fraid nerves and thats a good shot of something strong….just kidding. My bathroom is too small so we are moving a small bathroom shelf into the bathroom that was once a bathroom shelf in our base house years ago then in my duaghters room for storage and now back in our master bathroom. Easy fix and zero dollars spent. That’s my cup of tea… or shot of whiskey depending on the current situation.

  18. kelli says:

Books have always been an ‘issue’ at my house. I’m a lover of pretty much all books, therefore they are in every room. Drives the hubster insane. {Just one of my many habits that causes this… ; ) } We do have shelves, but I am to the point now that I want built-in shelves in the family room. The entire end wall, as a matter of fact. Wouldn’t that be nice? : )

  19. Bonita says:

You’re a riot! My song is more papers on the ground…and the bed and the table and the desk…

  20. Beth says:

Great post! It gave me a good laugh. :)

I have trouble with papers on my kitchen counter. I bought a basket where things that need attention can go. My plan was that once a day I’d go through the basket and take care of everything. Well, the basket has been purchased for more than a month and it’s still full of all kinds of things. :(

  21. Stephanie says:

    You’re cracking me up, woman!

Yeah – my problems could be solved with a sime solution – a maid!!! ;)

  22. Was that not the best part of the Vikings win yesterday? Watching Favre and the rest singing pants on the ground in the locker room. LOVED it!!

  23. Carmen says:

I haven’t been watching AI so this is the first time I watched this video! Hilarious! And so true, right? :)

I am also on the lookout for bookshelves.

  24. That man is gonna make $ off that tune! Good for him! Our kids can’t quit singing it!!!!!

We just don’t have any books in the house. JUST KIDDING!!!!! I have a cute basket in the living room will all my toddler’s books. We switch it out to Christmas books for the holidays. Both of my boys have bookcases. And I just scored a bookcase that is GORG for $75 from a store going out of business!!!

  25. Hattie says:

You made my day! I’m a school librarian, and I think I just might have to sing this song to my students. Too funny!

  26. Aimee says:

funny thing, hubby and I were up until 12am reorganizing books, toys etc. It has turned into a three room mess, I mean process. I can see the end in sight though and I’m liking it! I have attached a link to my easiest reorganize project that has saved my sanity.

    Have a great day!

  27. Laurel says:

Hahaha, my son has his version of this up on our blog too! :) Too funny.

  28. Karen says:

lol Nester! I love your version, and have come to the same conclusion about most of the messes in my home. I don’t have proper places to store things. Now I’m going to be singing this song in my head every time I see objects with no home. Wii controllers on the ground, wii controllers on the ground….. it doesn’t have quite the same ring though, lol.

  29. Lora says:

    that was funny!!
my clean clothes never seem to get put away in the closet or in the drawers… all i need to do is give a bunch away. too many clothes!!

  30. Debbie says:

As soon as I saw the title of your post, I had a suspicion of where you were going with this one. I LOVED IT! You were very creative with your lyrics.

General Larry had my husband and me singing his song all week and making up our own lyrics too. Maybe we should have a contest or something? LOL.

I can’t wait to see American Idol this week to see what will happen next.

Blessings and thanks for the laugh. It’s good for the heart and soul.

    Debbie

  31. Laura says:

Hahaha!!!! Love it! Totally knew what you were referring to before I even scrolled down to see the AI video clip! Very clever indeed!

  32. Bwahahaha…love it. Can see you rocking the ghetto look. ;)

I have a book problem too. Have pared them down, put some in the attic, donated some, etc. and I still have them around. I finally started using the big white trunk in my Family room to store books that I haven’t read yet. Umkay…it’s full. Maybe I need to start reading more so I can get through them???

I also have a little issue with magazines! I was just tearing out the articles I liked best from Family Fun, Southern Living, etc, and sticking them in a binder…but it’s starting to get a little full. And I don’t like to tear up my Martha Stewart Living ones…. So right now, I have a basket of magazines, a couple of magazine file box thingies, and a nice stack on my coffee table in a tray. :s

  33. micah murray says:

I have 3 sons also…and every morning I say “Pick these books up and put them away….so I understand your dilemma:)

  34. punkinmama says:

    Brilliant!

  35. Ok, I am holding you personally responsible for the busted gut I now possess.

Thanks for the Monday morning Ha Haa!

  36. The Scooper says:

    Girl, I am looking for about 50 simple solutions. As for our books {and there are many since we do the homeschool thing}, most are on a ginormous old shelf in the foyer but others are gathered in baskets around the living room. Cupcake, my 2-year-old, has his own basket {an empty clementines crate} for his board books. Still, I find them beside beds, in beds, under the sofa, next to the toilet. {Gross. It’s like George lives in my house. I think I need to incorporate a flagging system.}

  37. The Scooper says:

Oh and a sincere THANK YOU for that bit of side-splitting laughter to start my week! Awesome.

  38. Hayley says:

H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S, Nester!! Totally laughed out loud!

I have storage/organization issues that could easily be resolved…I am planning to tackly my craft closet over the next week so it’s no longer an eye sore, but a place that I can actually leave the door open and not be embarrassed :)

  39. Southern Gal says:

Love this! I just solved a similar issue in our entry/laundry room. Coats and shoes everywhere along with dirty laundry. I went up in the attic and found an old shaker style peg board made by my daddy in the “country” heyday. (Can’t stand to throw anything out made by my daddy or painted by my mama.) Anyway, I took off the puffy hearts, reinforced the pegs with screws, painted it and hung it on the wall. Love it for hanging coats and purses. I bought a shoe holder from Lowe’s to put under it. Now if I could only get my laundry under control in that tight space. Did I mention that no one comes in the front door? The back door is where everyone drives up and enters my home….laundry, kitchen. I need some more brainstorming.

  40. Mel says:

Books drive me crazy. I wondered what you do with your books because you don’t show any book shelves in your pics! I really kinda hate them but I don’t know what else to do with them. One trick I have seen that looks really neat is to find a cool looking belt, and put a stack of books inside it. Looks like how the kids used to carry their books back in the old days :) But then, what do you do with all the rest? I’ve often contemplated turning the broom closet into a bunch of bookshelves so they are out of site… What to do, what to do…

  41. Chris says:

Uhhh…my husband is a slob, and a simple solution would be to get rid of him. Is that what you meant? :) Cute post!

  42. Emily says:

Super funny! I need a couple more bookcases myself!

  43. Leslie says:

I too, have been looking for a low bookshelf. They are hard to find! I do, however, see many hutches that have come off child-sized dressers and desks at the Goodwill and Salvation Army. I may use something like this instead? Anyway, we have the same problem at our house! Funny post!

  44. Jill says:

That was the status of every one of my facebook friends the night that song was on! LOL Hilarious!

  45. Jodie says:

CRACK ME UP!!! the kids must think i’m looney for laughing so loud! :) we had the same problem with books…. so i went to the craft store and bought a wood crate. painted it, deco’d it… and tossed the books into it. works perfectly in our great room. most of the books are either in rooms or in the toy room (kid books…) so this helps for the several they like to leave laying around :)

  46. shelly says:

I’m going to be singing that all day! Good luck with the book thing…we have built in book shelves in pretty much every room AND we still have books on the ground :)

  47. Yep! We had that saaaame problem-O! Only, magnify that picture times 4! I was so annoyed having to constantly tell my kids to pick up their books and magazines. One solution that worked for us was to move our big bookshelf upstairs to the hall. That was a quick fix and I don’t plan on leaving it there permanently. But my kids seem to keep their books in order better this way.

In the future, I would love for hubby to build us floor to ceiling shelves in the living room on one entire wall…and then have doors on the bottoms shelves. I can dream, right? ;-D We have so many books here~!

  48. Belle says:

    O’ that was so funny.
For my book “issue”, I made a tall triangle of books that I can not throw away but do not need often. Then I added a glass top and used it as a table in our guest bedroom. It made a perfect reading table.

  49. sandy toe says:

Shoes and sports bags….they just get out of control!

Have you thought of installing “rain gutter book shelves”? Here’s a great tutorial: http://raisingolives.com/2009/07/raingutter-book-shelves-tutorial/
It won’t hold all your books, but thought you might be interested.
