Do you keep a design idea scrapbook? I have for years. It’s not a new concept. People call them dream books or glue stuff together on idea boards–Oprah does something similar and calls hers a Vision board. But let’s not get into that. I don’t need Oprah mad at me for stealing her ideas.

I’m talking about a place to keep all things associated with your house and decorating it. I keep receipts for furniture, paint chips I love but have yet to use and lots and lots of ripped out magazine photos.

Since we move so much I keep a rough sketch of our large pieces of furniture and their measurements.

Rip that dream kitchen out of the magazine and keep it for inspiration. There are lots of things that can be done to freshen up a kitchen. I found this kitchen years ago and painted my cabinets white and went for a neutral wall to mimic it.

I loved these drapes in a furniture magazine and months later I was drawn to the buffalo checked silk on sale at Hobby Lobby. Coincidence?

Don’t forget about the exterior. After seeing this photo I had to plant foxglove. It’s fun and inspiring to keep an idea book. Don’t be afraid to tear apart your old magazines and start collecting ideas. You never know when a great idea will strike.
