Honor Your Story

red letter

I can pinpoint the very moment when I realized our 13 house journey wasn’t just a sad time I tried not to think about. I realized there actually WAS a story, with adventure and fun times and totally depressed times and all sorts of emotions and with an actual plot and purpose that changed our family and me for the better.

It was the day I received this gift from my friend Dee owner of Red Letter Words. It’s a canvas with all the names of the streets where we lived. And when I opened it I cried like the desperate housewife that I was.

“Because with all that moving and debt and non-white house living (I had a thing for little white houses, still do) and discontentment and guilt about feeling discontent and living in rentals when I wanted to own, I still got what I was looking for: a home.”  –Chapter 1 The Nesting Place

For so long I tried not to think about some of those places that we loved and left behind. But seeing all those names in one place helped me focus on the good parts of getting to live in so many different places. For the first time ever, I felt like it was a privledge to get to move around so much. I realized then that I could focus on the fact that I just wanted to settle down or I could embrace the life we had moves and all.

And my realization after receiving this canvas was the focus of chapter one in our little house book about imperfection.

your story

I bet your life has been like that too. Maybe not with moves, but with something. Let’s just go ahead and celebrate that shall we?

she knew
Since that day four years ago Dee no longer sells custom canvases. I asked her if she’d make an exception for us and she’s opening up for custom orders just for the next four days, just for the Nesting Place community! Because documenting where you’ve been is a way to honor your story. You can get a sign with street names, zip codes, countries, or anything you’d like in any color you’d like that isn’t copyrighted.  Custom work is ONLY open thru Sunday, this is a super special favor just for us! 1. I had to sit and think for a moment, but I think I know what I’d want…My husband and I thought and prayed about each of our children’s (5) names. We kept going to what they meant and waiting to see if that was God’s “one” for them. Some we chose quickly, others took a little longer, but each of them has the meaning that fits them best…or they are growing into it;) So, I believe I’d want all of our names’ meanings (short defs. ofcourse!) I am looking forward to reading this book and this blog. I am new to your words, but what I’ve read so far seems to simply, wonderfully encourage!

  2. I think my sign would have either all or the last portaion of FOOTPRINTS OF GOD writing.
I love that. It reminds of my grandparents house. Thye had a print of it in their dining room.
I would love to have a modern day print to cherish and leave to my kids one day.

  3. I love the idea of listing all of our old addresses… Such sweet memories at each one of them! There are so many possibilities…. Maybe some of the memorable things my children have said over the years?

  4. Michele says:

I have recently started following you and love what I have seen. I love the fact that you embrace the imperfect, that’s me! I don’t want a perfect designer house. I want a story with collected items and my personality. I’m “design challenged”…. ugh. I know what I want but its SO hard to achieve! Thanks for giving me approval to be imperfect :) I needed that.

Thanks for the opportunity for the custom canvas and books!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Yea! I would absolutely put our street names. Mu husband and i have lived in many places before my daughter and i’d like her to see the pife she’s part of.

  6. Holly S says:

I would love to put the street addresses as well. It is a way to honor and remember what each place represented in that point of our lives!

  7. We averaged moving every 18 months in 20 years even though we stayed in one house 11 years. I was always packing or unpacking and trying to get my kids excited to meet new people as well as myself. I would do just what you did and put street names. It is our history and I am proud of it. Thank you for a chance to win.

  8. I really love the idea of honoring your story by listing the addresses of where we lived, or maybe important dates…wedding date, kids birth dates.

  9. This is beautiful! I would have our family motto!!!

  10. I like your idea of listing of all our street address. Quite a variety since we’ve lived in Nine different places (so far . . . . ).

  11. Alison says:

I love the idea of the street names where we have lived! Would be wonderful to have the memory to hang in our new home that is hopefully where we are going to be for the next 10 years!

  12. Beth P says:

Wow–i love her canvases…I would probably select one with one of my favorite verses. I love scripture on the walls.

  13. Marilyn says:

Hmm. For my canvas I think I would either use the towns in which I’ve lived, or my favorite Scripture, which is Zephaniah 3:17: “The Lord your God is with you. He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love. He will rejoice over you with singing.” (NIV)

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  14. Krista says:

Love your canvas! I would like the words to a fave song: And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me.

  15. Can’t wait to dig into your book! I would have either my favorite line of my favorite hymn or I would have a lyric from our first dance as Mr & Mrs!

  16. Mary M. says:

I am so happy to know that I am not the only one who has moved a lot. I love the idea of honoring these homes as part of our family’s journey. Thanks so much for your message.

  17. My spouse & I met in college & will celebrate our 20yr anniversary this yr! I would love to list all the places that are meaningful to us! It would be a great anniversary gift to him. Thanks!!

  18. That’s a tough one, I think it’s a tie between my theme verse for the year, Heb. 11:1 and our addresses, since I lived all over the country and it’s amazing that God brought us together!

  19. Susanne says:

I would really have to think about that. I love the canvas art and I think would like to put an inspiring scripture on it!

  20. PreK Teacher says:

I LOVE the canvas art. I’d have to think about what I put on it!

  21. Mine would be “It was all worth it”. Has to be, correct??

  22. Lisa In The NW says:

Snow White Way Would be one of the streets I put on mine…It’s where I live currently!

  23. I would love one of these canvases. I would put the prayer we say with my boys at night. “Keep them Happy, Safe and Healthy.” I would LOVE a book too!!! :)

  24. Kristi says:

I too would want the addresses….5, soon to b 6, addresses in ou 14 years of marriage…..such sweet and hard memories at each address. I’ve saved return address labels for years so I’d never forget…….

  25. Debbie w says:

Wow WOW! I would love a custom job with places I have lived! What a Mother’s Day gift that would be! Please PLEASE PICK ME!

  26. I think I would go with addresses as well. What a sweet perspective to focus on the good memories.

  27. Love the canvas! Since I’ve lived in the same home for my 18 years of marriage I think that, that would make a BORING canvas. I think I would want words that describe each of my three kids….since they are the characters in the story of this chapter in my life: creative, quiet, humble, adventurous, loving, sincere, humorous, dramatic, sassy

  28. I think I would want words of inspiration on my canvas. Hope, Joy, Mercy, Grace, etc.

  29. Brittany says:

I love the one u have posted “for such a time as this”
That has been a long time favorite verse of mine! Even when i don’t see the bigger picture I like to think God has a far greater purpose in it than I so often realize…

  30. All the countries we have visited!!! Such a great giveaway!!

  31. Bethany says:

I would love a copy of your book! If I had a canvas, I would want it to say, “The story is bigger than what your eyes can see.”

  32. Farrell says:

Oh how neat. I would do all the towns my husband and I have lived in separately and together since college. They are all in SC, so I think that would be cute!

  33. JeanniePage says:

I think I would also put the names of the streets we have lived on – which total 5 in our journey so far for my two sons and me. And I would love to have your book; have been looking forward to it coming out. Thanks for the giveaway. Love your blog!

  34. Sheila Henne says:

Hmm…I’m not always good about on-the-spot answers. I usually need to reflect awhile on something that would be so “permanent”, but do want to enter the drawing. We’ve lived in 8 different places over the years. Maybe even the names of all the cats we’ve had come through our home (around 40), some for only a few weeks. We don’t have children, so these have been our “babies”.

  35. I would do a verse from Proverbs

  36. Not sure of the exact words yet but it would be something inspiring for my sister who is going through a very tough divorce – will be final in a couple weeks. She has endured an amazingly hard past few years and has come out stronger than ever. She is an inspiration and I would try to find words to let her know. Thanks!

  37. I would either Psalm 37:4, Zephaniah 3:17, or something about Living a Blessed Life – after my blog. Congrats on your book release!!! It looks amazing!

  38. Leslie says:

The names of places we lived and our names.

  39. Oh man, what a cool idea! I think I’d like to use our street names, too. Or maybe some favorite lyrics. Thanks for the chance!

  40. shelleychristensen@rocketmail.com says:

Hmmmm, I would really have to think about it because I would want it to be AWESOME! Thanks for the giveaway.

  41. This is beautiful! I would use Psalm 3:3!

  42. One verse that I’ve clung to since I’ve been in college has been Luke 1:45, & I’d love to see that on a canvas to display in my home! It says “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her!” I learned a lot about God’s promises for me during that time, and still dearly hold onto what He taught me, and continues to teach me. Thank you for being so generous with your new book!

  43. For me it would be two words. Be Still. It is my biggest struggle and I need to remind myself a bazillion times a day that I need to do this! When I am still I struggle with guilt of not using that time to accomplish something. I measure my days by how much I accomplish. I’m trying to measure some days with how much I gained from being still! It is just as important!

  44. Krista M says:

I would use our home street addresses as well as the street where my husband proposed and the streets where my kids were born (in hospitals, not on the street ;) Thanks for the beautiful giveaway!!

  45. I really like the idea of putting all the addresses my husband and I have lived,, Like you, we have moved SO MANY times I’m not sure if all the names would fit on the canvas..12 times and counting (if the Lord is willing!) …and we’re not a military family! Congratulation on your book! Can’t wait to read!

  46. Danica says:

I would stick with the street names or the city names of all the places we have lived. we are currently in house 13 (our first purchase) after the last 12 rentals. 14 moves in 18 years!

  47. I’d love some quote that speaks to hope and faith during what seem like endless trials. Something I can look at every day and remember I have a God who is near, who loves me, and wants to see amazing things done through my life. That would be such an encouragement, inspiration and daily blessing. Thank you for organizing this! I just love the whole idea. xoxo

  48. This would be so fun to win!! I think that I would chose our family scripture. Or another scripture that spoke to me years ago and has stuck ever since.

  49. Danica says:

Whoops~I meant house 14 after 13 rentals. That’s what i get for trying do math in my head while typing! lol

  50. baileywife says:

I have several ideas for my canvas…dates of births, weddings, etc. Or our family names. Or Amazing Grace lyrics…..Oh, if I win it would be fun to choose that is for sure!! ~Kim
