Bonus Room Painting & A Giveaway to Help You Paint

painting

This room makeover is creeping along. By the time it’s done, Ty Pennington will have worn out 39 buses (busi?) with his one week makeovers. My kids will be so old they won’t even be able to get their walkers and grandchildren up the stairs to come up to this room. Chevron will be back in style.

Finally. FINALLY this room is painted!!!

And our boys painted it!

You can see in the second picture, the wall went from a flat, dirty, thin coat of builder’s pinky beige to fresh white. The oldest used a new to us painting contraption called the PaintStick to paint the ceiling and walls. It’s sucking up paint in the first photo there, then he just starts rolling the paint on and twists the pole as he goes to feed it more paint. We didn’t even need a roller tray. My boys all fought over who got to use the special PaintStick. That was a great problem to have. Plus, it worked especially well for such an odd-shaped room where we needed to paint the ceiling, slanted walls and knee walls. We were all dreading painting this room.

pink to white

Here’s a before and after of the paint. Trust me, it makes the biggest difference EVER. I’m always surprised at what a fresh coat of paint can do. I used my favorite white “Simply White” by Benjamin Moore. This time I color matched it to Behr Paint and Primer in One in an eggshell finish. I started using white a few years ago because we are renting and I want the owners to be happy with the color but now, I love the color too, I predict our next home will have many a Simply White walls.

We still need a bookshelf. And I’ve decided to be simple and not do anything to those windows. For now, (famous last words) I’m keeping the chairs and ottomans. Although that is really just a holding area for them. No one would ever sit back there. Also, those lines on the wall are not some kind of weird paint pattern, it’s just the reflection from the blinds on the window across the room on the left.

Oh dear goodness. This is where we hide stuff until we get the bookshelf. Don’t look back there.

Even though it’s a work in progress, we don’t have the luxury of closing off this room until we have a grand reveal. It’s used every day for homeschool and movie watching and I’m pretty sure the dog thinks it’s his room. You can see the beginnings of a gallery wall over the blue sofa. I’m waiting for a few gallery wrapped canvases (canvi?) from Unitprints and them I’m off!

I really wanted a larger Expedit here but I don’t think it will fit, although I haven’t even measured. We have the smaller one downstairs, so I may consider that. I also need to get one of those rug gripper things.

I only wish I would have painted the room months ago. What too me so long? Actually, like I said, the boys painted most of it and because they thought it was fun, they are already asking which room they get to paint next. Win!

Want your children to beg you to let them paint the walls? I contacted the PaintStick people and they are giving away four PaintSticks EZ-Twist Paint Rollers (the kind my boys used) here at Nesting Place. Leave a comment telling me what room is on your “next room to paint list” to enter to win.

*giveaway open to US and Canada

**The PaintStick folks sent me the EZ twist to review. I told them that I don’t really do reviews but if I liked it I might mention it. I liked it so much that I asked them if they’d do a giveaway and sponsor this post.  Oftentimes, I’ll accept small items to try out, usually, I don’t like them because I’m an old man and picky so, you never hear about them.

***GIVEAWAY CLOSED*** Winners announced here.

Our kitchen is next on my list for a new wall color!

  2. We’re hoping to buy a house this spring so I anticipate every room will be on my list soon!

  3. Heather V says:

We’ll be painting our entire main level next as part of our kitchen remodel. I’ve been agonizing over paint colors because we already painted it once when we moved in and I don’t like the color. Go figure. :)

  4. My “next to paint” room is likely our kitchen. It has a dark blue / medium blue lower half & white upper. Since I love sunflowers, I’m thinking a soft yellow would be amazing with the blue!

  5. My family room is on my summer to do list!

  6. Ooh, yay! We are planning to paint our kitchen this summer! It really needs a new look!

  7. Our living room is still a horrible mauve! I am so motivated to paint that room a beautiful white. It’s a light-filled morning room that would simply sparkle with the right re-do.

  8. The kitchen and hallway leading to it – DREADING it!!

  9. Every room since we are moving into a new house and they will all be builder beige… but in all seriousness the master bedroom will probably be what we do first.

  10. My foyer. I removed wallpaper over a year ago and still haven’t painted it. UGH.

  11. My laundry room, which is our main entry door for everyone, and the kitchen are my next painting projects. I love how a fresh coat of paint changes everything! Thanks for the chance.

  12. My son’s room while he’s gone to camp this summer!

  13. Chevron’s not in style? I must be out of it. :) I design wedding stationery and one of my hot sellers is my chevron/zig zag stationery line. Because of the demand for the chevron/zig zag I had to weed out the other designs. :)

    • just saying it will go out AND have time to come back in by the time that my room is done. but yes, I think it’s already on it’s way out, many people would say they are tired of it an many people still love it! Also, I just bought a chevron orange pillow for that room so, you know.

  14. We recently did a room swap and put our two youngest girls (3 and 7 mo) in our oldest daughter’s (11) room. The room has wide blue and green stripes on one wall and just doesn’t seem right for two little girls, so I am just waiting for a free weekend to repaint. I will probably go with white- since the room is small and kinda dark -and will repaint the dresser (it is a really obnoxious green right now) and add some color with bedding and art work.

  15. We just got done painting our master bathroom, next up is our son’s bedroom!

  16. Oh my word the room looks great so far! I love the “chevron will be back in style” line! I’m looking for a warm white to paint my office next… it’s currently in a state of bad carpeting and sunflower yellow…. yikes!

  17. The next room to be (re)painted around my house is the living room. When we first moved in, we slapped some paint on the walls and didn’t do a very good job so now we get to do it again. I love what the white walls do to that room, btw. Builder beige should really be banned. :)

  18. I love love love that rug! It looks like everything is coming together smashingly!

  19. This would be great! I am actually getting ready to paint my bedroom!

  20. I am painting our master bedroom next!

  21. We are in the process of building our dream home so I imagine many rooms needing to be painted as well as a nursery in the near future!!
I love your blog!! So many great simple ideas!

  22. Our Master bedroom!

  23. It’s a tie between my dining room and my basement stairway – both have 30 year old wallpaper that needs to come down and paint that needs to go up. I might tackle the basement stairway first to test out my wallpaper removing skills (or lack thereof) before I tear up my dining room walls.

  24. I have the kitchen, halls, and living room to paint soon!

  25. My whole house needs painted but I think I am going to start in my bathroom. :)
It’s just the tiny water closet and it’s almost prison-like at this point!

  26. Our basement…and boy, will it be a nasty job! Its huge, and irregular shaped..but the nasty flesh color has to go:)

  27. I am getting ready to paint our living room. Our home is a 1960s rambler that was once a show home, and I think that was the last time the living room was painted… But the kitchen makes up for that- there is a built-in blender in the counter and a toaster in the wall!

  28. I’m dreaming of a……. lavender/gray bedroom and would also love to paint the wall around our fireplace in the living room. We have fairly tall ceilings so I have been dreading the latter climb.
Maybe the paintstick would be my new best friend, make it less daunting and motivate me. Only wish I had boys :o)…how blessed you are!!!

  29. Meredith McLeod says:

The playroom and the family room are dying for paint!

  30. I’d love to win! We have a nursery to start painting soon :)

  31. Christina Souza says:

Getting ready to paint my guest room. I’m a first time painter, so this should be interesting. Everyone is praying the carpet survives. Love your blog! First DIY blog I found and you have helped me start defining my style and to learn what I like. THANKS!

  32. Julie Gonsalves says:

Our hallway has a really awkward sky light area that has made us avoid painting that room like the plague. It really, really needs a fresh coat of non- pinkish paint. maybe this paint stick is just the trick to motivate us!

    • I hate awkardness! I’m glad we went with white for the ceilings and walls (and trim) for that room, it kind of plays down and classy-fies the odd parts

  33. We will be redoing my parents former house and every inch of it will need new paint so anything that could lighten that load would be greatly appreciated! We will be starting in the living room or master bedroom ( the living room is really dark and ugly and the bedroom needs to feel less like sleeping in their bed)

  34. I am DYING to paint an accent wall in our master bedroom and my entire office. Hubby is all painted out so I’m on my own here and would love something to make life easier :)

  35. Planning to repaint living room/dining room, and hall this spring! This tool would come in very handy. Might even make me try painting instead of leaving it all up to the Mr.

  36. Danielle Alexis says:

I’m going to paint my ceilings, a nice crisp white!! I made the mistake of choosing a color lighter than the wall color, and it makes the whole house seem dark!!

  37. Angela M. says:

My next rooms will be my youngest sons room and my daughters room. They have both outgrown the blue and pink themes!

Thanks for the opportunity to win!

    Angela

  38. Heather Durham says:

Oh wow! It would be easier for me to pick a room that doesn’t need to be repainted. Time has a way of flying by and we are also the type of family that lives in our house to the fullest (aka we are rough on floors, and walls) I’ve just recently redone our back entryway and breakfast area and the thought of not having to balance a paint tray and keep the paint from running down the paint bucket and dripping all over the floors was music to my ears!

  39. My daughter has been BEGGING to paint her room–and I am such a sloppy painter and hate the neck and shoulder aches I get–so I have been putting her off. (Thinking: If I’m sloppy, won’t she be, too… ?) This could mean a fresh bedroom! (And then maybe also the back hall stairs with the crazy sloped ceiling…)

  40. The entire basement needs to be repainted.

  41. Love the work in progress! My next paint job is my CRAFT ROOM; although I’m pretty sure it will be a while. :)

  42. My husband and I are in the process of moving so I have a feeling every room in the new house will need to be painted. Although we are still fixing all the little things in the house to get it ready to sell, which includes painting the ceiling in both bathrooms.

  43. Hopefully we will be moving to a new home this summer and will have many rooms to paint!

  44. Oh my goodness, we could REALLY use this! After living here for 8+ years, we’re finally planning to paint our dirty walls–all of them. the whole house (except the children’s rooms, which we mercifully painted years ago). And, while gutting our kitchen. AND, in time to have a graduation party for my oldest. *sigh*
We could really use something to help this go fast and smooth.

  45. I need to repaint the nursery. And the hallway. And a two story foyer. Anyone want to help?

  46. p.s. Your room is looking good! Love the reality of the spot behind your sofa :-)

  47. Our 2nd baby’s nursery! She’s due in June, so we need to get with it!

  48. Next up for me is the kids’ ceiling and closet!

  49. SoCalLynn says:

We are getting ready to pain the entire downstairs (except the kitchen) and this tool would be so helpful! Thanks!

  50. Our kitchen walls are screaming, “Paint me, paint me,” so that’s tops on our list.
