A Few Easy Ideas for Game Day

root beer

For that Big Game, wait, are we allowed to say it on blogs this year? {rhymes with Pooper Schmoul?} or even that small game– or in my house, the Hockey Game which alas, my boys are thrilled to even have part of a season, ANYWAY, for the game, if you are planning on hosting I have a few tips that I’d like to share with a little help from World Market.

Sometimes we make things harder on ourselves than we need to be.  It has to do with perfection and what we think others will think of us and usually good motivations.  But, when we expect too much from ourselves, oftentimes, we give up before we even start.

Three things I see people do the hard way, that I think we need to stop doing::

1. Don’t make everything from scratch

I am all about semi-homemade. A little Zebra pop and Kettle corn mixed in with run of the mill microwave popcorn (that way your more expensive popcorn lasts longer and you still get to have freshly popped HOT popcorn). It lasts longer and everyone is happy.

Nachos.  My boys love nachos, especially BBQ chicken nachos.  But, instead of making it all myself from scratch and then dread making it and then finding an excuse not to make it. And then not wanting to invite anyone over…  I make it simple:

BBQ chicken nachos

First, grab a  rotisserie chicken, shred it up and mix it with Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey barbeque sauce.  It doesn’t even have to be warmed up at this point.  2. spread a layer of chips (I used three types from World Market, the Lime ones were my favorite) on a baking sheet and sprinkle the BBQ chicken and the cheese 3. put it under the broiler for 4ish minutes. maybe 3ish. maybe 5ish. Don’t walk around and do anything else.  practice patience and hang out there at the stove. 4. top with olives and green onions or peppers and sour cream.  I picked up this Ballpark Nacho sauce while I was at World Market and it was just the finishing touch we needed.

Prepackaged.  Fun drinks I don’t normally buy in glass bottles, individually wrapped snacks they rarely get are just the easy kinds of things I’m looking for.  Everyone grabbed a moonpie and a drink first thing, and I didn’t have to cook either one!  I was so surprised at the huge selection of sodas and if you and your man are in a beer rut, World Market has a huge mix and match section.

2. Don’t buy a bunch of disposable football themed plastic stuff.

Y’all. Let’s face it.  The paper cheapo-football festivity making companies are selling to the women.  No real football man cares all that much about having football printables and banners and flags and plastic football cupcake toppers. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, if you love it, go for it, but don’t lie to yourself and tell yourself your husband will be sad if cupcake doesn’t have a football topper.  I say, save yourself the trouble and don’t try to be all fancy football themed. Instead spend the money on a helpful server for your table. Serving pieces are just that.  There to serve. And they should serve us well. I’ve learned through the years that I’d rather spend my money on a hefty all-purpose white platter that also looks nice in my home, than a dollar store plastic sports or holiday themed ‘serving tray’.

fold flat server

My new favorite, a fold flat two tiered server that works with all my different sized plates.  I LOVE tiered servers but I hate storing them because they take up so much room.  This one folds FLAT!  I’m in love and it’s on sale for $7.49.

square

3. Go Square.

Make life easy on yourself and start gathering up some square things. We’ve talked about this before.  Square (including rectangles)  is easier to store and makes better use of storage space.  I’m serving with these things today, but tomorrow they’ll be put away or holding stuff in a drawer.  I like my things to work overtime for me.  And square is a very hard worker.

Yep, they went straight for the MoonPies.  Why do I even bother?

I get asked all the time—the two green recycled glass candle holders are from World Market as well.  Had ‘em for a year or so and still love them.  And now I just realized they have a 3rd size so now I’m considering that, I love groups of threes.

world market chairs

Lastly, before I even knew I was doing this post about some sport and it’s much-anticipated final game, I bought two of these Ella Side chairs from World Market.  They have been on my wish list for MONTHS.  But always too expensive for me at their regular price of $359 for two. Right now they are on sale for $199 for TWO, plus if you sign up to be a member of their Explorer program   you’ll get an email for 10% off that you can use towards the purchase!  Also, ignore the cord back there, it’s driving me CRAZY.

Also, as an Explorer Member, you build up points. For example, with every $100 you spend on gourmet food you get a $10 gift card, there are also coffee perks and a birthday surprise.

  1. {raises fists in air} Darn you Americans and all your cool stores! Shall I elaborate? World Market, Hobby Lobby, Joss and Main, Ballard Designs, Target, …..I could go on. But alas, hope is near. Target opens this spring in the Great White North. Now, if only those other stores would get their poop in a group and cross over that teeny tiny border, there would be many a Canuck who would love to buy their wares.
Sincerely, from a retail deprived Canadian

Haha! It is always so weird to see World Market stuff in the wild – I worked there last holiday season and rang up more World Market stuff than you could EVER believe. I used to go there for the home stuff, but now I’m a huge fan of their gourmet foods.
Also, I would have skipped those MoonPies and dug into those tasty nachos!

  3. I’m with Andrea on this one! I visit the World Market website often, but can only dream! Going to the Masters this spring in Augusta, GA and have mapped out the World Markets along the way!!

  4. Cords, grrrrr.

  5. great tips! we’re just beginning to appreciate the whole football experience in my house & this is just the motivation i needed to get ready for game day! i hear you about the hockey season… unfortunately, i learned to love hockey just as the atlanta thrashers took off for canada. so sad…

  6. I love a good football game viewing party!! Have hosted for years but then I realized as a big sports fan it is more fun to watch a game with a small group (me + husband+maybe adult kids) because we really get into the game not the socializing. ;)

  7. Can’t wait to make those nachos–and enter the sweeps. But, am I missing something? You can’t post a photo of those scrumptious-looking chocolate concoctions on the bottom tier and NOT include a recipe! :-)

  8. Where did you get the wicker tray with the white square dishes for the nachos and 2 dips? It’s so pretty!

  9. Yum, those nachos!! I am making those asap! And World Market – it’s my favorite store in the world, ever.

  10. HI, just a comment on the $500 gift card giveaway. I followed the instructions and it appears that unless I give Smartify or whatever the app name was, permission to post on FB on my behalf, it won’t allow me to enter the giveaway. Needless to say I closed the window, unliked World Market, and won’t be entering the giveaway. While I love that you provide ways for your readers to win gift cards and the like, I am totally opposed to the way this particular giveaway is structured. Huge fail on the part of World Market for asking customers to give all rights away in order to enter their giveaway.

  11. Those nachos look amazing! I also don’t like the space tiered servers take up, so that fold flat one is so nice! One more thing to add to my huge World Market wish list. : ) Love your new chairs!

  12. Love World Market. We buy all our coffee there – the best. I agree don’t waste your money on all that curtsie football stuff – save it and buy something awesome for yourself, lol….

  13. I love World Market, but hate that they don’t ship to APO/FPO boxes. I’m a military wife who would love some World Market goods!

  14. Lynne in NC says:

  15. Love the furniture – kitchen table is from there, the food, yum! The cards – just wonderful – they have a little of everything!

  16. Love World Market and your popcorn blend idea is genius! We are rooting our local team on this weekend in the playoffs.

  17. The two-tier server is great! Thanks for the link.
Can’t wait to try the nachos. They would definitely be a huge hit in my house!!
    Love your blog!

  18. I have been looking for a good tiered server, and I didn’t even consider that I might look for one that would FOLD DOWN. Thank you!!

  19. Just found your blog and I love love love it! I’ve added you to my blog list. Keep up the beautiful work!

  20. What fun ideas! I love that nacho idea- I’m totally trying that!

  21. Kristin H says:

I love those candleholders! OUr problems is that our mantel is very narrow – everything I love is always too wide! Do you know what are the diameters of the candleholders?

  22. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post
