Dimmer Cord

I love this little gadget I picked up at Ikea last year.  All you do is plug it into the wall and then plug your lamp into and use the thingy on the end to choose the setting–it’s a sliding dimmer on a cord so you can change any lamp into a dimmer.

We have a wall sconce that plugs into the wall behind our sofa but there’s no on or off switch for it.  Enter the dimmer cord, just plug it in, and plug the light into it and instant light switch with a dimmer.

The little end thingy doesn’t get hot or anything so I’ve felt fine about letting it sit on the window sill right behind the sofa or if I know we might use it, I’ll drape it over for the day.

  5. love me some ikea! just wish it wasn’t 4 hours away, not that the distance has stopped me from making the trip! thanks for the tip.

  6. Hi! I’m a relatively new subscriber and I love that idea. I got one of those last year for my Christmas Tree. You CAN splice a dimmer switch onto the wire, but… I’d rather not and this is so easy! I love your taste, blog and ideas! best ~ Laurel

  7. Nester, when can we see the new couch???

  8. What a clever idea! I love dimmers. I need to get me one (or two) of these!

  9. Check your light bulbs, dimmers can’t be used on most CFL’s. Makes me made because I just bought two packages of them for my dining room chandelier and can’t use them because of the dimmer switch.

  10. That’s a great idea. You’ve got me mentally surveying my house to see where I could use a dimmer.

  11. Dimmers a great for ambience. Nice little gadget!

  12. I have never heard of such a thing. I NEED one!

  13. I wonder if these work on LED bulbs? We are slooooowly replacing all of the incandescents with the warmer LEDs in our home. Love the idea of dimmers…and I’ll use any excuse to go to Ikea!

  14. such a great idea! thanks for the inspiration, I plan on trying this on my side table lamps in my apt :)

  15. I have one that also has a feature where you can hit a button and it dims and thirty seconds or so later will turn off completely. Love it for bedtime! Kelly

As a lighting designer, this is one of the best “tricks” in my bag. I highly recommend these for every one of my clients. So easy to use and simple to attach to a hidden place with double faced tape to hide the clutter. only you and your family know where the “control” is.

As for Lyn’s Question above, These dimmers will only work on 120V LED products and incandescent bulbs, nothing else. However, Be aware that dimming a incandescent lamp saves a ton of energy use. Only bring the lamp up to full on when needed, otherwise ambience glow rules! So these little gadgets not only allow for flexibility of light output, but also save money in the long run if used properly. Keep shining your light Nestergirl. Great Site!

@ Erica and all above, Keep in mind that if you plug both of your side table lamps into on extension cord, then in to the dimmer socket, they will dim together. Just another tip to consider.

  18. Great idea, need to get my self one of these dimmers! Thanks for the suggestion!
