I used to formally make the bed every day~especially when our room was downstairs in plain view for anyone who came into our house. But, over time, my bed making has changed. Now, we get out of the bed, pull the sheet up and lay it over the down comforter, each plunk up a pillow sham, and if I’m feeling fancy I put the big bolster in place. It takes about 8 seconds and not only looks presentable, but just disheveled enough to invite us back into it.

How do you make your bed?

I pull up the comforter (we don’t do top sheets here. Weird, I know.). Then we put on our sleeping pillows & that’s it unless someone’s coming over.
I like a pretty bed – for US – not just the chance that someone else might see it. That said, it all depends on how I feel that morning, how big of a hurry I am in, etc. My preferred way it to make the bed, add my pillows and coverlet across bottom and that’s what I try to do, but it doesn’t get done each and every day.

We make ours every day, complete with pillows. It starts the day off with one easy accomplishment!!
I always make our bed up every morning. If I get nothing else done the rest of the day I can always say “I made the bed”. It’s like leaving the house without earrings on….you know something isn’t right.
That is the only thing I get a little obsessive about.
I remember house hunting years ago and the realtor took us into this beautiful home and when we walked into the master bedroom, the bed was a shambles. It totally ruined the house for me . See..I told you, obsessive ;-)

I learned to make my bed every day when I was growing up. My husband is usually still IN the bed when I want to make it these days, so unless I remember to do it when I run upstairs, it often doesn’t get made anymore. I should make more of an effort! I actually feel better when I walk into the room and see the bed made!
I make our bed everyday. I’m not very good at housekeeping, but it drives me crazy to have an unmade bed. But it’s really just pulling up the covers and comforter and straightening things. That pillow scene is the best scene in that movie.
we usually make it up pretty, which i do like, but man, if only i had your posting to refer to as a kid….i could have possibly won the bed-making argument with my mom :)
tee hee!
I’ve always like a bed made your way….inviting me back! Love it.
I try to make mine everyday and arrange the pillows and everything properly so that I am not tempted to get back into until night time. Because in this season of my life, as I recover from a severe bout of depression, crawling into bed is often the easiest thing to do even if it isn’t the best thing to do. If I’ve made it really nicely I am less likely to “mess it up” during tehe day.
My husband knows that having the bed made is my love language! We have an understanding that whoever gets out of bed last is the one who makes it. This morning, though, I had to strip the bed because my little boy got sick all over it. Ugh!
I am *so* glad you posted this!! :o)
I do the very same thing and walked around feeling guilty for not just going ahead and following through on the “making the bed process”. :o) It just looks too cozy to get all tight with the sheets and perfect lining up of each pillow. :o)
Have a great week!!
Sincerely, Trish
Do you mean that you have your comforter under a sheet that is on top, therefore I guess in the “bedspread” position? That’s an idea I can use, I think.
um? i don’t think so. but I do have a duvet cover over my down comforter. i have no idea why though.
Many years ago I lived in Kuwait, and one of my first bits of culture shock was the absence of top sheets on the beds. I now have three children and hate making beds – especially bunk beds – getting rid of top sheets was a great relief. We just arrange the down comforter at the foot, fluff the pillows and call it done – this is an easy chore for my kids who would struggle with a top sheet at their ages. I make it a point to always have a made bed to crawl into at night. It doesn’ t feel clean or cozy to me to step in to an unmade bed.
Yes, my kids hate top sheets too, I think only my 13 year old uses one~nice to know they are so cultured :}
I still make the bed…with all the pillows and pillows. I think I like your way much more.
I had to come back to tell you this little story – I didn’t make my bed this morning because my youngest daughter had come in to snuggle and fallen back to sleep. When I went upstairs later to make my bed, I found that she had made it and turned the covers back so it’s ready to crawl into tonight. Sweet!
We gave up making the bed when our son arrived (almost five years ago!). Seeing you eight second trick has me committed to trying again. Also I am in LOVE with the big bolster. Wherever did you find it?!?
I also fold the sheet and comforter over. I kept seeing it done at stores and it always looked so comfy! I just made 3 pillow covers for some throw pillows but that’s the extent of my bedding (besides the regular pillows and shammed pillows that don’t move). I love making my bed, because it’s nice to walk into my room and the room feels instantly clean with a made bed!
I always make my bed. I love having my sheets tucked in tight when I crawl into bed at night. In college, my roommate from Guam told me once if you didn’t make your bed, your guardian angel doesn’t get up. This has always stuck with me and I tell my kids the same thing. At ages 3 and 6, they make their bed every morning too.
Is this an invite? Because that bed looks super comfortable!!
Sheet pulled straight, comforter pulled up, top flipped over, pillows fluffed, done. Process: short and sweet!
And it looks wonderful…love the bolster!!
This is so sad, but one of the reasons we built a one-story house is so I would be forced to make the beds, I’m serious. I go through the whole rig-a-ma-roll and it makes me happy each time I pass our room. Love your blog! ~Leslie
I pull my sheet and blankets up and tuck them under the pillows, then stand two king size pillows in front of the stacked pillows… This takes less than two minutes. Later, I might come back and put the pretty pillows on the bed, but most days they are stacked in the corner. My husband LOVES that scene in Along Came Polly!
I’m with you! Most days, I pull up the top sheet and flip it back over the comforter, fluff our bed pillows and I’m gone!

Hate to admit but the only time we make bed is when we know people are coming over. My mother used to have me make my bed every morning. So I figure 30 yrs later I am still on my bed making rebellion.
We haven’t gotten to the bedroom yet – we’re still working on the kitchen. So, I’m afraid the most inviting part of our bed would be the flannel sheets.
Or, the snuggly 18 pound Maine Coon kitty – you choose ;)
I make the bed nice every morning. When our day gets chaotic I always know I can go into our bedroom for a few minutes and have order and peace and beauty (and quiet). If it looked disheveled enough to climb back in I would!
If by “plunk up a pillow sham” you mean you throw the sham covered pillows on the floor at night and then plunk them up on the bed in the morning :) then we make our bed just like you guys, minus the bolster.
yep
I’m so surprised how many people make their beds! I rarely make mine. My hub is usually still in it when I get up too. My mother never made us make our beds, but it IS something that I would like to teach our children to do. I better get on that! Thanks for the reminder!
*Sigh* I wish I could say I made the bed everyday, because when we do, it feels super-luxurious! Maybe this is a good new years resolution?
We have two blankets on the bed (even though we live in Hawaii – who’da thunk it?) I mostly just throw the top blanket over everything underneath it, even if the sheet and other blanket are totally crumpled. That way, I am fooling myself :-) and when my dog sneaks up during the day, he doesn’t get hair and doggie feet all over the sheets and pillows.
I yank the sheet and comforter into place while I’m still in the bed (like making a snow angel!), and put the body pillows on top where we sleep-we have a heated mattress pad and the pillow on top warms the bed up in the entire space that we put our bodies when we get in!
Sometimes a cat is still in the bed when I make it up, but neither of them seems to mind being part of the process!
My European friends don’t do top sheets, and they don’t make the bed up either-they air the bed all day with the comforter across the end of the bed and straighten it up before getting in. They find it odd that Americans cover up the bed all day! LOL!
I make my bed so you can bounce a quarter off of it. I want to get into a bed that is completely straight & no wrinkles & hospital corners.
Follow-up. If I for some reason didn’t make the bed one day, I always make it before I get in it at night. I’m cool like that.
Mine takes about 28 seconds. It involves retucking the top sheet. Mama loves good, tight sheets.
“just disheveled enough to invite us back into it.”
~~Waggling my eyebrows at you~~
Love it! I do make my bed most every day. The day just doesn’t seem to start well without it being made!
I just bought new bedding for our room and so it’s all made up- duvet, Euro and standard shams, and a coverlet at the bottom of the bed.
Pull up covers smooth, place pillows and go.
Funny this is I never make my bed unless we have company coming over BUT I ALWAYS make my bed before we get in it at night time. I must have my sheets straightened up and feeling tight!
Ha, I usually don’t! Is that an acceptable answer? ;)
LOVE your pillow cases. Wow. Love.
Also, I’m so guilty of not making my bed every day. I was taught to as a child, but am lazy these days.
But when we (read: I) do make the bed, we’re VERY simple. Duvet and 2 pillows each. I hate top sheets. I get tangled up in them.
Our bedroom is right off the kitchen so it’s seen by everyone who enters the house. I normally do a quick pull the sheets and comforter up and throw on our sleeping pillows, if company is coming I put the shams and 2 decorator pillows on. Like anyone see’s it, but you know how we are, in case someone see;s my room they will know I make my bed. (:
i love this post.
i was never a decorative-pillow-person, but i did like the sheets crisp and tucked in… and then i got married to a man who like to have the flat sheet untucked at the foot of the bed and on his side… and no bllanket. well let me tell you, i stopped “making” the bed… if i have to start from square one every day, it’s just not worth it to me :) and like the along came polly post, i just would rather get on with my life than do that every morning and every night :)
plus, having a bed (and bedroom) that my husband feels comfy in is sooo much more important than whatever emily post says about bed-making.
i am one of those people who hates making the bed, but usually make sure it’s made before hubby gets home from work because he likes seeing it made. when i do make it, i go all out with our 3 sets of pillows and the 3 decorative pillows. i don’t make it perfectly, but good enough to say it’s made!
today i have freshly washed sheets
all the corners are perfectly tucked and smell lovely
That’s how I make our bed too. I fold the top sheet down over the comforter so it looks like a turn down service at a hotel, fluff the pillows and done. Easy to do, easy to get back into .
Wow, never even thought about making my bed during the week, Why? Because me & my hubbie work different shifts so, when I get out in the morning he is still asleep. Well he will pull the covers up and straighten the sheets, but not like really making up the bed all pretty like I would do it. Well the weekends are a little different, I’m at home and spend more time in the house and love to see the bed all pretty.
I like my bed made. I like all the beds in my home made! I just feel better, like I accomplished more, if all the beds are made. Plus, a bed takes up so much real estate in a room that once you make it, the room looks 75% cleaner. It’s like magic!
I once read in a homekeeping book that making the bed with the sheets up is a US thing. In Europe, supposedly, the sheets are turned down so that the bed airs during the day. I can see the logic behind it, especially if you use lovely smelling linen spray.
I make the bed completely first thing every day. Then I shut the bedroom door to keep the kids out. This means that no matter how trashed the house gets during the day we have a quiet, tidy refuge when evening comes.
I make my bed in mourning every day.
It is so lovely in there……
actually, I love a made bed, but I keep it simple. We don’t use flat sheets, just a sheet covered duvet. So I just have to pull that up and fluff a pillow or two.
and wait until we meet again…
