If you suddenly find yourself motivated to paint your hutch and dining room table and 5907 billion chairs
do not, I repeat DO NOT do anything but follow that motivation.
Don’t ever squander the precious gift of motivation, come Home Goods or high water, I’m painting today, I have no idea how long this motivation will stay with me so I need to use it all up while I can.
See you soon.

Looks good so far! You are going to show us that dining room when you are all done right?
I can so relate! This hutch in my dining room has been in my mind lately! I want to paint it! Ha ha! Soon, I will! Soon! I can’t wait to see your results on your project.:) Blessings,
Sandra
Great color! I need some motivation to paint the stairs and a floor.
I must say you’re rubbing off on me! My crafter in crime, my sister in law, came to stay with me. So, of course, there is a project to be done. I’ve been saying that I just want to paint something, and the nester said I don’t have to sand or nuthin. I quickly decided upon a color, and we did it! I chose SW 6227 Meditative. We painted my sofa table and side table. I had already spray painted the other side table. Luv the spray paint, but the Behr primer/paint combo your recommended is waaaay better. Still haven’t slipcovered but that’s next! You go girl! Love it btw!
Oh, and I said the nester paints it right there in the room, too. My meanie helper wouldn’t let me do that though!
I wondered if you were going to leave the black, I can’t wait to see it all done, it looks good so far (;
that is so funny…that is what I was thinking about this morning!!! painting my mother’s china cabinet and my dining room set! I’m doing it.
Are you going to use that technique from The Painted Cottage and let some of the darker colour peek through?
Did you have to sand the hutch? It looks like you just painted it in place? I need tips. I have a 1980′s hutch that I want/need to paint and it seems overwhelming to get started.
Just do it! If you can use paint and primer in one like the Nester, all the better. If you don’t like the hutch the colour it is now, you most likely never will. We shouldn’t have things in our home that don’t make us happy.
Your hutch is awesome!! It has such good lines.
I soooo know what you mean. For the past two days my house has been falling down all around me while I finished a project I was working on. “No time for laundry, no time for dishes, HAVE TO FINISH THIS PROJECT!” I have to admit I love having that excuse.
I can’t wait to see the finished product……..now I’m off to do some laundry :(
As I mentioned on FB I just can’t get over that you are painting without a drop cloth. Then again, as they say, this isn’t your first rodeo.:) I’m so with you on taking advantage when motivation strikes! I can’t wait until the day I have every room “done” so I can start all over…lol. It never ends, does it? :O)
Enjoy your holiday!!
oh yes, motivation. hold yee high to chest until you pass out from holding it so tight.
I laughed outloud when reading this post. I have been painting a bunch of furniture white. 3 tables, a bookshelf, hope chest, and armoire! They were black, but I hate them dark and want/need them white again! I learned a valuable lesson; never do what everyone else does just cause they do!
Man do I need some motivataion….3 big projects that need to be done and not an ounce of motivation….Thanks for sharing yours
How on earth do you keep little boy hands and dog paws off your wet furniture? I love the new look!
I love the color! Hurry up and show us what it looks like finished! Can’t wait to see! :)
I’m painting today too!!! I decided that I can’t stand the oak trim that is ALL OVER my house. So I’m painting it white, one room at a time. It’s a terrible process (4 coats) but it’s going to be totally worth it!!! Painted my oak cabinet under my sink a dark brown today and changed out that nasty gold hardware for some brushed nickel! I’m in love with it and it’s not even done!!!
Are you sanding? What type of paint? Oil based or the paint/primer in one? I have orangey oak everywhere in my house too – the orange oak palace! I’d love your tips cuz I wanna do the same thing!
Go with it!! Don’t lose that mojo. ;)
Nester,
I have to say, at first sight of the hutch getting painted, the “matching set” girl that I am gasped. Shame on me though, because by photo three, I was totally convinced that you were genius to paint it.
I painted my kitchen cabinets this same color (or similar) in February. It made a huge difference in my kitchen. I’m absolutely sure you’ll love your transformations just as much as I do. My faovrite thing is that it makes white absoultely gorgeous like none other.
Great job..you are fearless and I admire you for it!
i know what you mean. i was struck by the urge to rearrange my living room yesterday and today i woke up wanting to clean out the homeschool room and find better ways to organize and store stuff. i also want to paint but i need to buy a paintbrush first since i threw my other one away after using oil based paint. wonder how long this motivation will last?
Melissa, if you’re anything like me, your motivation should last about 2 days, followed by a hungry day and a cranky day! lol! (Sorry, just had to throw that in there ;) )
I love your cabinet’s new look! It’s lovely and layered. Hehe…today I had the motivation to calligraphy/scrapbook around a family photo that I wanted to put in a shadow box I recently bought. I listened to inspiration and postponed the dishes. I’m sure glad I did! And I’m glad to be reading right now that someone else does similar things. : )
Yea, yea, yea! Keep going!
I love that the books are still in there. :)
This is so so true. I had a serious motivation boost at the beginning of the year and got so much painting/projects done. I’m glad I went with it because now I’m pregnant and not feeling the motivation to do anything.
So, did you sand the hutch first….or just attak it with paint and motivation??? I have 2 hutches that are in desperate need of some new fresh paint….and I don’t know how to get started…..please fill me in!!!!!!!!!
haha – great point!
already looks so good! my hutch is in need of some paint. do you mind sharing your paint color with us? looking forward to seeing the finished result.
The hutch is looking fabulous. I can’t wait to see it all done. Hugs, Marty
Exciiiiiiting! You are the queen of great teasers! ;o)
love what you are working on..can’t wait to see the finished project!
looks awesome so far!
Looking good! I have been painting like crazy lately. Oldest daughter is moving into her first apartment on Saturday, and she is taking many of our older “thrift store finds” with her…mom gave them all updated looks! Lucky girl!!!
So true! Any motivation I get, I have to ride that wave for as long as it takes me, because who knows when the next one is coming? Good luck!
I can’t wait to see it all done and decorated, love the color too, I have an 80′s hutch that needs painted too!
Rondell
PS love your blog!
LOVE it. LOVE the color!!!
Although everything you do looks great, am I the only one that mourns your old stuff and secretly rebels against change? I fell in love years ago with your toile sofa and black and white checked chair and everything about your old living room. A photo of your room actually became the inspiration for my new family room. (Note I said, “inspiration.” I’m not a total stalker freak.) :-) I also loved that hutch in black, and I recently painted my kitchen table black, leaving just the wood on top. Now you’re changing everything on me, and I feel a little unsettled. I’ve always known that you liked to change things up, but I wasn’t prepared for such drastic changes. Do I just have issues, or are there others who secretly feel this way too?
I loved it black also :)
You’re not alone. I feel the same way, probably because I’m a sucker for black furniture and love seeing how other people decorate with it. My dining set is the two-tone black and wood. I also like subtle reds and yellows. I let out an audible gasp when Nester mentioned she planned to slipcover her toile sofa. So, be comforted in knowing you’re not the only one with issues. :) Geez, Nester! See what you do to us! ;) I do love the fresh new look of the living room, and you continue to inspire.
Happy Fourth!
Funny. Now get back to work! :) What’s the color?
LOVE IT!
Looks great…I’m all about changin’ and rearrangin’…keep the MO going!
I can always use more motivation. It such a key factor to getting things done. I painted our hutch a few years ago and love it right now. Painting furniture can be so rewarding! Can’t wait to see this one done.
So far so good! I loved the black but can’t wait to see what you do with it.
No drop cloth, no emptying drawers! Woman, you are insane! I love you!
YES! I have to agree…
Yesterday in the middle of my normal housecleaning, I was suddenly stricken with motivation to distress my living room coffee table. So… I dropped the mop and got started. I finished in an hour or so, and I was so happy with my end product that it has motivated me to get started on my dining room table next.
Motivation is a signal that should NEVER be ignored! :0)
We’ll cheer you on! Great color too, can’t wait to see the finished result. Have a fab weekend!
Love it …
so true … I put together a BBQ yesterday … and then was in the groove, so I took down the screen door at the front of the house. I have filled and scraped the old paint on the door and trim and am off now to get paint … got to move when the spirit is willing.
Ewww….I’m LOVING this! And I’m a lover a black furniture…but this already has that ‘Painted Cottage’ feel!! :) Can’t wait to see the finished product!
xo.
just wondering what your hubby does/thinks when that motivation strikes??? :)
just asking because I want to know that I am not alone. .lol
Mine gets scared! My biggest problem is that hubby does NOT like shabby chic style. So I will get items I want to “mess” up and he will have a whole other idea of what should be done with it so I have been sitting on several pieces and I am just going to do them this weekend anyway. My problem is not knowing WHAT color to choose! I can’t afford to buy a ton of paints and change my mind so I have to figure it out first.
My Mom’s motto is “Do things when you feel like doing them!” We of course still had our normal routine growing up but if we felt like sewing or painting or cooking that also had a high priority. Motivation is a wonderful thing. Can’t wait to see that hutch.
okay, fine then, i’ll go sand down my sidetables…..! :)
