Summerize Your Nest

Can you tell what season it is by how the inside of your home looks?  I’m not one to feel pressure to change everything for each new season but, I find myself naturally, almost unconsciously tweaking a bit so our home reflects what’s going on outside.

There are lots of small changes you can make to welcome summer into the indoors and I think this is a great time for a little miniseries:

I do. Can’t help it. If it looks too wintery in the spring, I get hot.

  2. kelly says:

Yes I change my home for the Seasons, I think it gives me a good excuse to redecorate, which I love to do!!

  3. My favorite part about this time of year is fresh flowers! I cut them from my yard, I buy them at the farmer’s market…whatever it takes to bring the outside in!

  4. Definitely! I love little seasonal touches! Can’t wait for your series!

  5. Southern Gal says:

I don’t, but wish I did. I’ll have to stick around and learn how.

  6. Susan says:

Of course I do! Just filled up my little glass apothocary jars with sea shells! Heading toward the beach in just a few days! Can’t wait. Miss you, girl!
    Hugs!

I try to change out small decor. Like, seashells instead of rocks in flower vases and seashells on the mantle.

  8. tinam says:

Just small changes. We don’t have a very cold or very long winter, so I don’t have to do alot of changing then.

I am one for fresh flowers and plants year round, but this time of year, when I have so much in my own yard to use, I have more flowers/plants around. This time of year is also more about outside living so the sunroom (although used daily, year round – it is like a den to us), and the patio, porches, etc. are fluffed up a bit more and definitely getting more use.

I’ve never jumped on the shell bandwagon – or the beachy look – it would look a bit funny here in Tennessee. LOL Although I think it works great in a more beachy/coastal looking cottage style.

I’ve never been big on seasonal decor, but this spring I decided I have had ENOUGH of the darker accent colors in my mostly-neutral living room and am now in the process of swapping out reds and black for turquoise and greens. After 8 years with the same old thing, it’s time to lighten up!

  10. I definitely like to change with the seasons! More fresh flowers, more shells, more bright/light colors.

  11. Karen says:

I endeavor to change out accessories twice a year. I have the idea of a spring/summer and a fall/winter theme. I am not there yet but am working on it.

  12. I make small changes as the seasons change. Summer and spring mean fresh flowers. WInter and fall mean more warm throws around the house.

  13. Jessica says:

I make small changes but not big ones. In the spring I take darker decor such as reds and dark greens and put them away for the fall. I love bringing them back out in the fall since it is my favorite time of year and I am a warm color sort of person. I like to have fresh flowers throughout the house during spring and summer. It really puts a smile on my face when I see them so colorful and alive.

  14. Janell Beals says:

I change out a few things, but don’t go crazy…and currently, with our fall like weather in Oregon, it is odd to realize it is actually JUNE!!!

  15. mary beth says:

I absolutely do change things out with the seasons! I used to feel silly bringing out the seashells and beachy looking things of summer since here in Kansas we have no oceans, but I try to do it in a nature loving way, and collect soft blue bottles to go with them. I dont know why but it has a cooling calming effect on me and reminds me to slow down and enjoy summer a little bit more. It just makes sense to me to decorate with the seasons, so much is around for cheap that we can use to spice things up a little and give our old things a fresh new look without breaking the bank!

  16. Angela says:

I don’t change my decor because I’m not sure how since I live in a log home. Shells would be out of place in here. This house has been extremely hard to decorate because I’m not into the stereotypical log home look of quilts and country decor. I’m struggling because I’m surrounded by so much wood, dark furniture, and heavy rugs (which I like, but it gets old). I wish you could come over and help me (I’m only a few hours away-pretty please?).

  17. lori lucas says:

actually that is what i was going to post about today! i always change with the seasons. I get too bored otherwise. it drives my husband crazy, but he knows i’ll do it regardless and has become used to it!!!!! i like to regroup things i already have out. anything heavy gets put up. i like to put out stars, vintage flags, a few shells, and silver. i also love to put out vintage postcards from my state and all kinds of vintage travel things. AND every year i do it differently! that’s part of the fun tho.

  18. Jennifer says:

Yes, but in small ways, different colored placemats on the table, different accessories, moving things around to different spots helps too. My candles get changed – different colors. Different photos in the frames, etc.

And for Angela in the log cabin, I am NO expert in the LEAST but my first thought was to add white/tan/beige neutral colors in LOTS of textures. That would lighten up your rooms and add softness and some updated looks without contrasting your warm, wood home.

  19. YES! I definitely change my home with the seasons. After a few months of looking at the same stuff, I need something different to spark my interest. :)

  20. ruthann says:

I am a constant change… I’d love to blame it on the seasons…but my husband would probably say it’s just a disorder!
Currently, I’ve pulled out lots of lighter colors, and have put away the darks (deep reds, mostly).
I have a family room/playroom that is mostly coastal/country but I don’t know how to “not do” the beachy/summer thing in the fall and winter since the wall art and everything are ships, boats, nautical inspired decor.
Any suggestions? I threw cream pillows on the cream/blue/red/steel blue plaid couches to “lighten/brighten” it up for summer… I’m currently thinking of painting a corner floor to ceiling built-inish book shelf cream, to bring on the “light”. It is currently stained darker brown… outdated looking!

  21. Yes, I do! In summertime I tend to add natural elements from the garden or sea. I also like to change accent colors a bit and lately am craving navy. It’s a darker color, but paired with whites & brights it looks perfect for an all-american summer look!

  22. Jennifer says:

I do a small amount I guess, as I put out fresh flowers cut daily from our fields, but I have this “idea” in my head that decorating with starfish or other summery- ocen like things would be weird when you live on a ranch in a very country house in the midst of Texas. Do you think I am wrong in feeling that way?

    • Jennifer says:

Nester, thank you for the follow up post today! It really helped me with a true vision of summer-izing! =)

  23. i think i keep my home summerized all year long! and even though i’m 2 hours from the ocean, I still pack in seashells, starfish and sand wherever I can. I love feeling like I’m always at the beach!

  24. Tisha says:

My home probably tends to be more “springy” all the time, so I have to work harder in the fall and winter to change it up a bit. I too love fresh flowers in season and sea shells for the summer (even though I’m in TN, Tina!). I am working on switching my furniture to all-white slipcovers and hope that will give me more opportunities to decorate seasonally with throw pillows and accessories. Thanks Nester, I love all your ideas and can’t wait to see the rest of this one!

  25. Mary says:

Yes! I use seashells, seasonal flowers, topiaries, pussy willows, etc. I have a vintage dress form that stands guard in my foyer and even she dons a straw hat in the summer. Anxious to see what else you decorate with for summer.

  26. I totally change things for the seasons. I bring out my brighter colored slipcovered pillows and add more summery type things. I love it

  27. You know, I really don’t. I just open the windows and cut fresh blooms from whatever is in the yard — lilacs…iris..may salvia…peony. Bee balm is up next, I think. And then, come mid-June, so many blooms to choose from, I’ll have vases in every room. I guess that’s enough of a seasonal decor change for me!

Loved your hydranga post below, btw — gorgeous!

  28. I try to, but I don’t always do it as early as I should. I’ve been thinking about summerizing this week, so your miniseries will be a perfect fit for me. :)

  29. I’m a season freak…but as soon as I finish getting everything just the way I like it I can’t wait for a new season :)

  30. I know my hubby is going to want to kill me, but I want to change the curtains down stairs for the summer! Ours are just too heavy! I also have been snipping hydrangeas from my mother’s house and placing them around the room. It makes me so happy to see those beautiful blooms!

  31. can you even believe it’s June??? craziness! I’m trying to keep fresh flowers {especially hydrangeas} in many of our rooms, and have good intentions of making a few quilts so that we could change that out in our bedroom…I would like to do more seasonal change outs…looking forward to the miniseries!

  32. Summer-izing is in order here for sure. –Loved your last post, I actually got teary eyed.

  33. Cindy S says:

I make small changes here and there. I pull up all of the rugs, except for the entry way rugs. I will put the warm throws away that I have in the Liv.Rm. as soon as it gets warm to stay.
I also go almost completely without color. I’m not really into color anyway. Everything is in the whites and beiges now.
    And that’s about it!

  34. jill says:

I’m into a project and would love some advice. We have a 230 sq. ft. narrow room that has floor to ceiling windows that look out on a yard with a pool. With 5 kids and a puppy, we’ve trashed the carpet, and underneath is just plywood subfloor. The walls are cream with white trim and the adjacent kitchen floor has cream 12″ tile. Today I had someone take out the carpet, tacks, etc. and my plan is to paint it with Benjamin Moore porch paint. We have our pine farm table in that room, because the small eat-in area of our kitchen does not fit our table or family. I have a hutch that I painted something close to Ben Moore Pomegranate and my table chairs are black ladder back with rush seats. These are the colors I’m thinking of using in on the floor and I’d love some advice. Hemlock 719 or Sioux Falls 705 – leaning towards a lighter version of each. This will definitely qualify as a “summery” room as it faces Southeast and we are in Northern CA where it receives great sunlight all year long. I love these blue-greens with my red and black accents. What do you think?

    • nester says:

Jill, it sounds wonderful! I’m so sorry I don’t have time to help people one on one right now. However, I bet for a tiny fee, Setting the Stage {that green square button on the sidebar with the chair} could help you decide on a great color!

      all the best!

  35. Not really. I live in Arizona and it is pretty warm all year round. I had custom bedding made in the fall and the comforter is really too hot for our warmest weather. I ended up buying a white matelasse quilt for summer and I just fold the comforter down at the foot of my bed. Other than that, I don’t decorate for the seasons. Being an interior designer, I change my home all the time anyway.

  36. Jen says:

yes!!!! this is what i love to do! i love the change in seasons and i want my kids to think back to their childhood and when those certain decorations come out they can just feel the change in the season within our home! HOWEVER, i’m really trying to keep it totally US and our STYLE — my husband doesn’t love floweryflowers or beachy stuff…so i’m suck with what i want for summer. i’m mainly wanted to dress my fireplace mantle. i love your blog! ideas are great!

  37. Robin says:

I just completely re-did my bathroom with a very “loose” beach theme. I tried very hard to make it look like “I didn’t try too hard”
But I wonder how It will feel in December with 2 feet of snow on the ground!
I love to re do things with the seasons!

  38. Sarah says:

I don’t change much, but I do bring out more white, I always change my faux flowers around the house. I tend to bring fresh cut flowers inside in the spring and summer a lot more and buy them at the farmers market too!

  39. Camilla says:

I don’t think it is so much the season that makes me want the change from winter decorations to summer ones, but rather what I see in magazines. Seeing all these wonderful, fresh, summery rooms with white curtains flowing in the summer breeze naturally I want some of that fresh, cool feeling myself and so redecorate.

  40. Gabby says:

Sure do! I especially count down the days till Fall and then Christmas. My faves!!
