Every room should have a focal point, an main draw, a place for the eye {eyes if you have two} to land.

Maybe you have one that is built in like a fireplace, a large bed, a huge window? Maybe it’s just the main wall that you see when you walk into the room. You can even create your own focal point.

Imagine you only had enough stuff to style one wall per room. You would want that wall to be the one with the focal point. Focus on that wall/space first, get it right, and then move on to different walls.

This was a trick I learned in my staging classes. It seems simple enough but lots of us have never really put it into practice. I tend to want to spread the cute accessory/art love around a room to fill it up. Then I wondered why my mantle looked so weak and why nothing seemed finished. But, I found that when I focus on one place in a room at a time, it helps me to be able to choose what works best for that particular place, finish it, and move on.

If you are like me, you have things that would look great in 5 different places in a room. I would get confused and overwhelmed with where to put things.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • start with the focal point, accessorize, art it up and finish that part first, then use the leftovers for the second most important place in the room.
  • give priority to the most important wall/section of the room and cater to it first, not worrying about what will go other places–it’s better to have a blank wall for a few months while you are getting your home the way it works best {yes I just repeated point one}
  • use this rule for decorating at Christmas as well

Can you identify the focal point in each room? Have you focused on it or are you more concerned with spreading the decor love around?
